TOPIC: You're A Bald Headed Flog

Yeah fair call. The AFL should have called on Kennett to apologise and withdraw those remarks at the very least.

It still concerns me that a bunch of low paid, low skilled crowd controllers are the public face of somebody else's campaign and they are perhaps one of the least equipped to deal with it properly. The AFL should take responsibility for all of this and not dump the responsibility on the low man on the totem pole.

Again, a lack of leadership in my view

I have a real objection to people capriciously saying a CEO "must go" every time something goes pear shaped.

Gil is a pleaser who waits to see how major issues play out and then tailors a response to suit public opinion. He did it with Goodes and he's doing it again here. That's not his job. His job is shaping public opinion by getting out there early and having a conversation with footballing public. About whats in and out and what mistakes have been made to date.

He has to go.

The amount of times the security guards amble in front of the sight screen just as the bowler is coming in to bowl leads me to conclude they know nothing about cricket. So it wouldn't be a stretch to suggest they know little about footy either. Regardless, I don't think you need to be a sports fan to identify obnoxious or threatening behaviour anyway. Crap comment by a crap bloke.

Yeah, naaah. It doesn't sound like he's listening.

It sounds like he doesn't know whether to justify it, admit the AFL was behind the crackdown on the basis of the 'flog' call or drop the whole thing immediately.

So, he's kind of admitted that things will ease up, kind of admitted the crackdown will continue and kind of admitted he has no idea what he's doing. For a bloke who claims he doesn't want the fans feeling intimidated, he certainly has been ramping up the intimidation.

All this while not knowing where the AFL is going to be drawing the line.

Basically all that guff boils down to don't blame me, look elsewhere for an escaped goat.....oh look, Jeff Kennett

Better than nothing but he does sound a bit like someone who's just got back from a corporate seminar on active listening. He's still unable to explain what the problem is that he's trying to fix.

Gees, it's like Boston Legal here some days.

The AFL know how to do one thing well; create an massive over correction and reaction, then act like the resulting problem isn't of their making. He can deny, but visible security at games around the country was upped.

People having been going to the football for decades and making noise, some being rude, drunk and racist. This has all been mostly self regulated and people turfed out, or shamed nationally if they have made racist comments.

One umpire complains and the AFL goes fascist on every punter in every stadium. Mclachlan uses 'safety' as a euphemism for control. If he ever went to soccer matched in the UK in the 80-90s as I did, he'd see what unsafe is. You didn't get families going to these games, as has been a staple of footy forever.

If they want this mythical 'balance' he blunders on about, how about they bugger off and let common sense do it for them.

There definitely was increased security activity at the Port game on Saturday. No question, up and down all game - even more after the Zac Butters broken neck spack-out and again after Mikey's 5th goal. Optus was only half full too.

No one believes Gil because Jeff is such an arse.

What they are calling Kennett's apology is pathetic. I imagine someone like him sits on a lot of committees and boards, and gets invited to speak in front of a lot of people. You'd hope there are consequences for his words.

His role at Seven West doesn't come as a surprise though. Stokes will be sending him an autographed bottle of Grange.

I’ve never met Gil. Maybe he’s more impressive in real life. Whenever someone spouts the sort of nonsense he comes up with, be they a politician or a prominent businessperson, i normally check whether that person has ever had a real job.

From Gil’s wiki page:

“After leaving university, McLachlan worked as a management consultant with Accenture. In 2000, he was employed as a strategy consultant to the AFL by CEO Wayne Jackson. In 2003, he was appointed as General Manager of Commercial Operations and in 2008 was appointed Chief Operating Officer. In December 2012, he was appointed Deputy CEO.”

Have you ever met a management consultant? That was his first job out of uni. Good lord. Everything from there was inside AFL House. I think that says a lot.

Looks like Gil is qualified in telling people how to do jobs he's never done himself, and probably couldn't if he tried.

How perfect for the AFL is he?

Saw a great suggestion today - make the security staff friendlier. Give them a bit of club merchandise that they can hand out to suitable kids. Get them to smile and say hello to the supporters. Ge them to work the same section each week and enjoy a bit of banter with us.

Way back in the day I used to go to parties. For some reason parties in those days were called "shows" (Grandpa Simpson moment there). Hence the Friday afternoon question, "You know of any good shows this weekend?". Anyway, the occasional show would turn violent, but it never happened at any shows that we threw. And the reason for that is that our crowd were a happy lot, and those intent on violence would have felt out of place. Sure we'd party hard, and people would get very drunk and loud and dance on tables, and sometimes steal our mates cars and hide them - but no violence.

So its not hard - just make the footy a place where those intent on violence feel out of place. Happy, passionate, sad, angry - they are all fine. Just not violent. And the security staff can be the people who set the tone. They might need a bit of training - but I'm sure they could do it.
