3AW’s football reporter Jacqui Reed said Nicholls was ‘visibly shaken by the incident’.

The best case scenario for the ejected bloke is that he got turfed from a game for running down to the race to yell an insult at someone going about their job that centred on their looks and personality instead of their sexual orientation.

Not sure he’s covered himself in glory even on his telling. Umpires shouldn’t have to put up with that.

i thanked him & explained ,to be called that at seventy five is a compliment. it deflated the belligerence .& we both had a laugh

Maybe not but before you go turfing the punters for doing something they've always done, it wouldn't hurt to inform them of the change in policy.

They're job is being watched by, and prior to now, being shouted at by people while they adjudicate a ball being kicked about. They're not laying bricks to build a house and being accosted by passers by. They are part players in a pantomime.

If it's no longer cool to boo and shout at the actors then fair warning is in order.

Screaming "no way umpire that is crap" is different to calling someone a faggot or whatever.

I get that hypen but there is a conflict of stories here.

One person claims he called him a p*** and the other claims he called him a flog.

It might actually be better if we found out which story is true before hanging the bloke because personally I don't see the issue with calling him a flog. It's not worth getting chucked out of the ground

I totally agree that footy is pantomime - I said exactly that when I explained why I'd give Neale a bit of a boo - but I probably wouldn't condone patrons following the actor to the stage left to continue to abuse him as he was walking off stage.

If Nicholls pointed out the fan after being called a 'bald-headed flog' to have him ejected then it's probably a little over-the-top; but after 350-odd games you'd have to ask yourself why he chose this bloke and this one occasion to do it? I'm sure he's bee called worse than a flog. Perhaps he didn't know he was bald?

Or if the bloke went to the race to deliver a homophobic slur then getting tossed was completely justified. I don't think that's being precious.

One good thing from this is the news that Nicholls hearing has substantially improved since 2006.

Maybe instead of a siren, the Launceston timekeeper could pop his head out the window and hurl a few insults.

The umpire in question is allowed to make mistake after mistake, and the media is gagged on saying anything, the coaches of respective clubs are gagged from saying anything, and when a fan voices his opinion on how well Mr Nicholls is umpiring, he is kicked out, meanwhile, Mr Nicholls goes down to the umpires room at half time and says, "well I think I did pretty well in the first half".
