Out of curiosity....the AFL has said that the Carlton fan who claimed he was kicked out of the MCG because he called the umpire a 'bald-headed flog' was instead booted out because he had run screaming and waving his arms from two bays away and "spooked" the umpire.

Assuming the AFL aren’t making this up, do you think this crosses the line, or should umpires just have to cop large angry men running threateningly in their direction from afar to yell at them as they go through the race?

There is nothing on the AFL website about spooking the umpire.

Realistically, how is any umpire going to be able to see somebody running from from 2 bays away. The only thing that the bald headed flog would have known is when the guy insulted him from over the fence.

'Large angry men running threateningly in their direction'? Where did that come from?

Nothing like stretching absolutely nothing into an attempt to find fault.

Look, I don't know all the facts. But let's say for the sake of argument Nicholls isn't making this up, and that he did see the bloke running from a long way away, and Nicholls did perceive him to be acting in aggressive and threatening manner, do you think the right thing for security to do is to tell Nicholls to toughen up, or have a word with the guy and give him the second half outside the venue to think about his actions?

Yeah who knows how that went down. I’m pretty sure most people know where the line is in regards to what can be said - rightly a lot of progress has been made towards eliminating racist and homophobic slurs (to start with).
I reckon even relatively harmless messages delivered in an aggressive manner deserve attention. Players umpires and spectators should not feel threatened or uncomfortable. Yeah it’s a fine line sometimes and the punishment might not always fit the crime but if that’s the price we pay I think I’m OK with that.
I don’t boo or yell at the footy (probably a personality disorder) and if everyone was like me then I wouldn’t go to the footy - too boring and no atmosphere. I’ve seen some aggressive barracking, heard not much abuse and am on the fence as to whether we are being nannied. If somebody leaves their seat and heads off to lob a gob full at a player or an umpire then that’s worth a look from the powers that be.

So a guy comes running towards the race, you're flagged by at least two security guards, and you're so threatened and panicked that you stop to point him out to the security and wait until he leaves rather than just talking three steps to the safety of the tunnel.

Is it that big a stretch here to declare that Nicholls acted like a flog? Seems pretty floggy to me.

The notion of a perceived threat opens the door for some interesting decisions as well, particularly in the area of racial profiling. A lot of people said they were very threatened by Adam Goodes' imaginary spear. I'm not sure what they thought he was going to do with it but I'm not convinced the threat was real.

I know we all like hypotheticals, so if a large black man, a medium sized middle eastern man and a small white woman run at towards the race, will all three be thrown out or just the ones the umpire has profiled to be a threat.

It was a mistake and Nicholls should apologise.

But seriously, have you seen Melbourne supporters? In order for the Melbourne supporters to call security they had to put down their knitting.

I've sat in the midst of Eagles supporters at a derby and I'm fairly sure that if I hadn't voluntarily toned it down (because of their threats, which means it wasn't very voluntary), they would have called security and got me bundled out.

No concern for the man who was publicly humiliated, carted away in front of his friends or family, I imagine quite scared as he's marched into the lock-up security room, photographed, interrogated and removed from the premises, because the umpire incorrectly perceived a threat.

I think it's because I'm concerned about civil liberties and you think the footy is the pub.

Late to the conversation, in this instance have to agree with the majority, overkill.
I have barracked too loudly at times, and even noticed the disapproving looks on occasion. I also wonder, if everybody in the stadium supported, like those casting the disparaging looks. How bloody boring and dull an event would a game of AFL be to attend?
Sit down and watch a GWS game with no crowd noise on TV. Even if the game is of a very high standard, I find it much harder to engage in the game without the atmosphere created by a raucous crowd.

I think you're reading into his emotional response shane. He had to wait, on his words, about 30 minutes for the integrity officer to get his membership details and he was on his way. I'm not sure about the 'interrogation' bit or where you got that from. Perhaps you took a different view of his 3AW call, but he didn't sound humiliated to me, just angry.

I think it's completely unacceptable behaviour as a fan to run from two blocks away to abuse an umpire as he or she walks from the ground, and I think it's entirely reasonable he was ejected from the ground.

I think it's a great shame that an umpire has to be left shaken by fan behaviour, and that people think that's acceptable and you would go a step further to say 'he's a flog' for reacting in a very human way to that sort of behaviour. I can't imagine why anyone would let their kids go into umpiring if the consensus view is that unless the turn the other cheek to that sort of intimidation they are weak.

But like I said, I think everyone has a view on what is and isn't acceptable fan behaviour, and how life-shattering missing a second half is, and I think in this instance we'll just have to agree to disagree.
