Matt Pavlich was overlooked in the first year eligible to draft, he just got in (age wise) by the skin of his teeth. Ten months later he was being touted as the number one pick. I have a feeling Dillon might be the same. He turns 19 next week.

The draft age is too early.

Brayshaw snuck into draft eligibility and we took the risk. Its essentially his first year now. Crickey, he is going to be a star.

I don't know any eighteen year olds who have taken the competition by storm.

That's one of my complaints, hypen. How does the competition benefit from that? He would have still been drafted, next year. Clubs with well maintained lists can be undercut by clubs with poorly managed lists. It's a corruption of the existing draft system, for no reason other than to hold an event.

The other is the perception that Peter Bell was given a job by his mates and now he just gave his mate's kid a bag of cash for no immediate return to the club or it's supporters. Without any explanation about how they followed proper governance to make sure this was a merit based appointment.

yeah the mid season draft is a sham and serves no purpose, this has been proven by the type of players drafted. The solution to what they are trying to achieve is for clubs to loan players. But the competition is not that mature yet.

I was responding to Corporal A who seems to think if you're not Chris Judd by the time you've got your learner's permit; you're no good.

I don’t understand how other clubs are undercut Shane. It’s still a draft order based on the worst teams picking first, be it now or at the national draft. Carlton get first crack at Josh Deluca - it’s not exactly like they are getting a huge leg-up over the competition.

Where do you reckon the first person from the mid-season draft would go in the national draft? Pick 30? Pick 40? Pick 50?

It makes a mockery of the alleged reasoning behind the mid season draft, ie to top up teams that have significant injuries that are impacting on performance NOW, not preparing your list for 2020. Furthermore, if you don’t have long term injuries you are disadvantaged as you don’t even get to participate.

I like the original intent but the model ain’t working!

i reckon Stephenson is an 18 yr old that's pretty much taken the competition by storm and would be a walk up start in any team. Whether he would be allowed to play the same sort of role and get the same delivery with us is debatable of course.

its yet another example of the AFL trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. You have the same number of players at each club, injuries are part of the game just get on with it, as we have done for the last century. Otherwise have a system where each team can put players on a long term injured list and replace them with a player from their own reserves team for the duration that player is on the list. Each team now has a reserves team so this doesn't affect other clubs.

A mid year draft just adds to the AFL filling up media space and unfairly affects teams in subsidiary leagues who lose good players in the middle of their season..

i dont see any benefit in it and will be interested to see how many games these mid season draftees play and how many are discarded at the end of the season or given a contract.

Fremantle could have taken Bolton and had a midfielder that would probably have played within a month. They could have taken Gault and got a ruckman/forward to back up Lobb like we needed. Sure, they aren’t 18 but that’s not what this draft is about.
Instead they took a 19 year old kid playing ressies at East Freo. And if they delist him at the end of the year they will look like ***holes.

It’s a missed opportunity.
