TOPIC: Einstein

They have two main jobs regarding football. They play one game a week and they spend the rest of the work week preparing for that game. So the majority of their working life as a professional football is spent doing things that will make them perform better on the weekend.

I mean, they certainly could knock off training and then go and practice their kicking in the park, but it would be ridiculous. They could also spend some more time, using the full resources of the club and presumably the paid time of someone who's very good at identifying and correcting kicking issues.

Tabs could do with a good mentor for his set shot kicking.

Morgan, it is not about improving skills, most of these players came to the club with good skills. It is about maintaining the skills. Something the Hawks, Pies, Eagles, Giants do. Something the teams that are struggling don't do.

I think if I was Tabs and kept missing goals that I should kick, and copping all the abuse from the fans and the media, I would find time to try and correct these flaws in my game. Personally, my flaws were so great and so many, I couldn't be bothered.

What do you think is wrong with your kicking action?

You can practice kicking the ball and hope to get better or you can work out ways to ensure that your kick doesn't have to be freakishly good in order to kick a goal.

Our method is making reasonably skilled players look unskilled.

Shane are you under the assumption Lyon is not showing up to work or something?

That is true too. My issue was with the idea that a professional footballer should be expected to work out their own skills training on the side.

Morgan,

you spend as much time as it takes to maintain skills at an AFL level. Anything less is a failure on the part of professional coaches.

It's not rocket surgery

Do you think any pro stops practising skills?

Keef, as old and pickled as he his, will still spend a month in the studio 'warming up' before going on a Stones tour. He's 135 or so in junkie years or something, so it takes time to grind out the groove. Another guitar player, Tommy Emmanuel, far less pickled and younger, practices his skills every single day.

These blokes are masters at what they do. They still need to practice to keep at that level. You practice the things you find harder to do consistently, otherwise you're not improving.

If they were coached by Ross Lyon they'd be finessing their sets lists, stagecraft and audience engagement, and half way though a tour, they'd wonder why they suck at the stuff people came and paid to watch.

Good analogy Drubbing!
Forgive me if I travel back in time, but there was a footballer, a Sandover medallist with Souths who later went to Old Easts. I think they are now called, well all sorts of things, among them The Sharks. Said footballer had really good foot skills and after a stellar career as a player for Souths and Easts long into his retirement he was called in to improve Easts really poor kicking skills, in half a season or less they went from worst to best in the WAFL. I am well aware that the degree of professionalism was a fair bit different, but the point was that expert tuition reaped results and I don't think it beyond the capability of someone to impart that to the current Dockers players. Steve Marsh was the man in question.

So after practicing passing into the forward line all week at training they have named Ed Langdon at CHF and Hogan in a pocket. Interesting.

The thing is it is actually easier to coach a Ross Lyon style of game, rather than hone a game plan which brings all of the basics and fundamentals of football together.

Just get the players fit enough to run up and down the ground, make sure there are always plenty of players around the contest and discourage risky use of the ball including precision kicking.

As a coach if you developed a plan which relied on good kicking and handball and simulated this at training there would be no need to isolate and practice ‘skills training’.

The current game plan doesn’t emphasise a reliance on playing on quickly and sharp kicking so its to me expected we aren’t that good at it.
