The superstar full forward we went all out to recruit, and the tall fella we recruited to play as a stay at home marking forward coz he don't like rucking.

We are playing one as the 5th ruckrover, and the other as lead ruckman, while our best ruckman and ruckrover are languishing at Peel.

Yep, Hogan. That's what he did at Melbourne and had kicked 40 odd goals before injury, leading into the finals.

For us he's getting more possessions on the wing or outside 50. Plus our forward line always seems to be completely vacant or overcrowded, nothing in between.

I reckon he's the best bet, but Melbourne played him as a high half forward and he had the best year of his career last year. I reckon he's wasted as a stay-at-home forward.

But for the sake of argument, if you play Hogan as an isolated full forward 100m from the play most of the time, does that mean you are playing Tabs as a high half forward? I don't reckon that plays to Tabs' strengths either.

Of course we've solved the problem by playing no-one there. It's comical watching the forwards set up for a centre bounce and then sprint up the ground once the ball has been bounced.

And we are not the only side, not by a long way.

I reckon if we had anybody like deGoey, we'd never know because he wouldn't be playing forward enough to lead at the mids.

We could have 2 of them and we'd be complaining about player x being wasted on the half back flank and player y being useless on the clearances because he's been dragged back to add numbers to the midfield.

It's pretty silly saying you'd play him deep forward because nobody gets the chance to shine there.

If you want to find the next deGoey, you need to change the way we are allowed to play to use the players strengths. Then you'll know whether the playing group is good enough or not.

Oh yeah, its also a bit stupid criticising their poor kicking and missing targets by hand when the concentration is on effort and congested football to the exclusion of all else. Everybody can see that except the top men at Dooker Central....and the RWs.

It was interesting being able to watch the game from the stands for a change and notice that both teams did flood to one half of the field at certain times during the game. Not sure but it certainly seemed that we did more often.

Even when they took off on those fast breaks from half back they generally had forwards to kick to who had plenty of space to move into. Lynch beat Pearce on the night but that was because they delivered the ball so well and so quickly to one on one contests. In fact I don't think we had winning backman on the night.

In contrast our forwards had no space and our goals were most often hard fought and scrappy, not from leads. There were plenty of moments that had supporters with heads in their hands in despair but one of the worst was when Fyfe had the ball and was streaming through the centre in the third quarter but didn't have one Fremantle player in front of him. As he had a Richmond player about to come at him from the front he actually hanballed back over his head to what he hoped was one of our players. Result...another turnover.

I can't understand how and why other clubs can seem to manage this but not us. I personally think it's because we don't back ourselves enough, take too long to move the ball on and go around the boundary far more often than through the middle.
