Gameday traditions grow over time, usually organically. TNT took off because Chris Connelly thought it was a cool idea and relevant to the club. Never Tear Us Apart was part of a pre-game montage before Port home games and took off from there (Kochie was a fan, apparently).
The problem with Freo’s gameday presentation isn’t that it’s too American, it’s that they are so keen to fill the space, but too scared to try anything interesting or give it space to grow: it’s the synthetic grass of entertainment.
Freo has a partnership with Curtin University. I’m sure they’ve got a video editing / multimedia degree. As a place to start, take the best 11 students, give them $2000 each, and get them to come up with their own pre-game montage. Play a few before the game over the season. It would be genuinely interesting to see what they came up with, and it would be different every week.
