How can you seriously say 'not necessarily more skillful'?

I'm aware that you try to shield Roly all you can but thats nuts. Richmond were routinely doing things that Freo routinely cannot.... like hitting targets by hand and foot and kicking straighter on goal even from running side on the goal shots (we kicked 12.14, they kicked 17.9) Thats 26 scoring shots apiece and we lost by 25 points.

Richmond's skills are AFL level, Freo's simply are not

I only said that to bait you Yeti.
Yes, they are marginally more skillful, but their success was built on hard running and sticking to their game plan. Its easy to look good when you know exactly where the next link in your chain should be, and they have worked hard enough to be there.

Wtf we got skills!
We are extremely skilful at hand balling to a player in a similar or worse position than we are.we are greatly skillful at kicking to our disadvantage especially 2 on 1 contests .we are mind numbingly skillful at fumbling and then choosing the wrong option .

RR, it wasn't built on hard running and skills, it was built on smart running and skills

We had a bad game. Our players were clearly wrecked after the intensity of the contested footy of last week. We made a number of poor decisions under pressure and our skills gave way to panic. We weren’t far off them for scoring shots but inaccuracy and bad luck cost us. We lost by four goals. Disappointing, but not a blow out.

Our percentage is still solid - 5th best in the comp. We have a very settled looking defence led by the brilliance of Hamling and Pearce, but they were let down by our mids and forwards not taking control of the ball down the field.

We fought back brilliantly in the first half, and tried to again in the second.

Yes, the loss hurts but - and it pains me to say this -Richmond looked classy and were a much more skilled team on the day.

And there’s always been something unpredictable when we play Richmond at home. Games we should win we often lose.

A couple of weeks ago we beat GWS’s in Our Nation’s Capital ending their phenomenal winning streak at that ground. We have played some good football this year.

I also forgot to wear my game day earrings on Sunday for the first time this season. I’ll cop the flack.

Saturday night is a huge game for us, on a huge night for this country.

Breathe. It will be okay.

Well they shouldn't have been that good considering that they had 5 of their starting 22 out and lost another two on game day before half time.

Well, we have about 4 of our best 22 out as well, haven't we?
Richmond have been shite but they were good on Sunday. Real good.

I'm trying here Suker but I can only come up with Hill. You couldn't be meaning Sandi or Bennell. They haven't played for so long and probably doubtful they will again. Ballas? Doubt whether he would be in our best 22.

Sandi is on the list and our best ruckman. Logue, Hill, Blakely, Duman...
I am not making excuses for that dreadful turdfest, but too much is made of their apparent top guns missing. They have been struggling to cover but on Sunday all 22 implemented a plan, all on the same page and spanked us brilliantly. Depth and an understanding of what is required killed us on the weekend.

True story. I was late getting to the game by about 6 minutes. By then we were 4 goals down but for the remained of the half – mostly – we made Richmond look like a rabble. But they came back and made us look ordinary. I saw Matera miss about 4 snaps and I saw Richmond hold good structure behind the ball and you kinda knew that when we got it back and moved forward their spare man would clean up and drive it forward one way or another. Overall my time at the game saw an even contest everywhere except on the scoreboard. It was a solid loss and as they say you learn more from a loss than a win. Its just the excuse you need to swing some changes. Blakely for starters. Duman must be the unluckiest player in the squad – being edged out by Nyhuis...but for how long? The two older small players we brought in this year (and a couple of others) will be nervous and not because they are rubbish (and I like Conca) but because we need to develop our young talent. I don't mind seeing Tabs and Hogan take marks deep in defence – I guess in part they have to follow their man too but if they are being simply sucked back we need better communication between players to cover zones. Richmond play small and we have been playing tall and I'd still argue we are too tall – but maybe just against some sides.
I have confidence we can pay a lot better and that we can improve our game day list but it all takes time. The craypot wasn't built in a day either and we are still constructing the blocks to put the whole show on the park.

Larkin, if your adage held true we would be the smartest team in the comp. But we are not, some do not learn from a loss. As for too tall, if Lyon used a strategy to make use of our height advantage, remembering these talls are generally of good skills, we should beat any small side, just through the advantage of the free kicks given away by a small player trying to stop a tall from marking a footy kicked to advantage.
