Corporal Agarn
For Salty Dog....

"All hands on deck, we"ve run afloat" I heard the captain cry
"Explore the ship, replace the cook, let no one leave alive!"
Across the straits, around the Horn, how far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course, and no one left alive
We sailed for parts unknown to man, where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold, could match our captain's eye
Upon the seventh seasick day we made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue, no mortal place at all
We fired the gun, and burnt the mast, and rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept, our tears were tears of joy
Now many moons and many Junes have passed since we made land
A salty dog, this seaman's log, your witness my own hand

I like Morgan's comments because he complicates things.

There are any number of posters who, in their need for a solution, fixate on one thing. Now I know some don't agree, but our coaching staff and players are reasonably talented professionals with a modicum of intelligence. If it were just one thing that needed fixing, they'd fix it. But the world is complicated (and Roly is lying when he says its a pretty simple game). If it wasn't complicated, no one would bet on the footy, because we'd all know who was going to win each week, so there would only be people willing to bet on one side.

When it comes to tactics, I'm not that smart. So I usually just notice who has played well, and rely on others to analyse the big picture. And that is why I come on Dockerland, just to see if there are some pearls of wisdom, some nice writing, and some humour. I find the more vitriolic attacks off putting.

No problem, SaltyDog. We all have our likes etc

Just read my other stuff and ignore my responses to Morgan then. That's what I do

Gidgegarry, Lyons strategy did get him to 4 GF's, but it was not good enough to win one, and he had very talented squads in each case. Yes Freo will be sore, depleted and tired from yesterdays game, and that is the problem with the strategy. It is not sustainable. Wallace tried a similar approach as coach of the Bulldogs and Tigers and got the same results, failure to complete the job because of player fatigue at the business end of the season. Because they made finals however, both coaches thought/think that it is a successful strategy, so wouldn't/won't change.

Not many teams would have taken it up to Adelaide in that form. It was a gripping ferocious contest that we're all trying to unpick, but I doubt most matches will be played like that.

Freo are capable of improvement (in forward structure) but it's moot whether that eventuates soon, or whether wear and tear start to get the better of the team.
Near future: Fyfe and Hamling both looked tired and sore, particularly late in the game. Need to right the ship quickly because next few opponents will bring a run and stun game. Maybe give those two a rest.

It was a weird game, At times it looked more like rugby union than aussie rules. there was a passage of play where 3 times in a minute or so the ball was kicked straight up in the air. I have no answers but it was the strangest game I had seen in some time. lots of effort but not much reward.

Interesting Capt Snooze because some said they were crap and we were a shoe in to win.

I would very disappointed and be taking a complete re-assessment on how good we are if we can't beat an injury depleted Richmond at home though.

It would be interesting to know where everyone had Adelaide to finish this season before a ball had been bounced.

I would have said top 6.

Yes, I put them top 4 (from memory). Just shows how hard tipping is.

But wasn't Ellis-Yolmen good? The number of times that he was the bloke who fought his way through dense traffic was impressive. I'll be interested to see how many coaches votes he gets.

My '2 Cents' on the status of the team at present: I believe our defence is effectively the best within the league, and if you review the statistics regarding 'average points scored against', it seems to be the case. We're winning more than enough centre clearances, but as nearly every man and his dog has alluded to, the connection between the mids and the forward line is severely lacking. Just as others have said, the explanation for this could be one of, or a combination of: our midfielders being under extreme pressure when delivering to the forwards, the ineffective or non-existent leading patterns of our forwards or opting to "bomb" the ball in through a deep entry. I see someone alluded to David Hale's forward coaching prowess in this thread. David Hale was a champion footballer, but if memory serves, he was more of a ruckman if I am not mistaken?

Probably using apprentice rucks from our forwards stock is also contributing to the demise of our forward craft.

Or, we could employ a running, agile, strong marking type, who will rarely win a ruck tap but cause serious irritation to opposing beanpole rucks. Then we simply train to lose most nearly all ruck taps and learn to read the play from the losing ruck contest a bit like every team has done for years when confronted with big Sandi. And, some of those teams have won flags, one beat us in a gf. The name Cox springs to mind. He is young and a great set of hands.
Can't hurt. Lobb to back up...and both to have spells up forward or wherever.

Yeah expat, I'm not sure that's the issue in play here.

Tabs was being double teamed when he was forward. That is one of Roly's hallmarks. He generally only plays one task to make a spare down back. The 666 rule helps at bouncedown but not last that point.

Where that has worked (kind of) is when he had forwards like Pavlich and Reiwoldt. You'd call them once in a generation players, except for their being two of them.

Reiwoldt was fairly quick and a good overhead mark. Pav was not slow and had a bit of bulk and muscle. They were both capable of beating single opponents and would usually do ok when double teamed. Tabs ain't that kinda player.

Continuing to use that system in the absence of a genuine superstar can't be justified. One of the criticisms I made of Roly almost from the time he started, was the failure to play a second tall and use that to develop Tabs. Opportunity missed.

Now we need to be a bit more clever than we've shown in the past. Things like a second tall deep forward to stretch the defence. A forward structure that allows Tabs and Sunshine to have spaces in which to lead and players skilled enough to honour the lead.

Add in the use of crumbing forwards and you start to develop an attack that will concern opposition coaches. That's just a start. You need set plays that everybody knows what will happen as well as an organised forward line.

The weasles have done that with JK and flipper. It works of is correctly implemented. Watching the game guy get double teamed over and over again without any response from the coaches box is more than a little frustrating.
