I take it Shane 'the game winner' Kersten is our only victim of the Optus turf.

I know this was not the basis of the current argument, but I thought I'd look up the total number of injuries currently listed by each club. When ranked we are certainly towards the wrong end, but we aren't on our own.

  • WCE: 4
  • Bris: 5
  • Car: 6
  • GWS: 6
  • Port: 6
  • Gee: 7
  • Rich: 7
  • WB: 7
  • Ade: 8
  • Ess: 8
  • Syd: 8
  • Freo: 10
  • Mel: 10
  • Gold: 11
  • Hawks: 11
  • Coll: 12
  • North: 12
  • StK: 12

I've been roughly tracking the same thing Mercury, and we've been probably a little worse than average since pre-season.

But when you look at our list as it stands, out of that 10 we have four 'tests' and a suspension. That leaves four injuries, being:

Ballas - Old man hamstring
Bennell - chronic calf
Hill - lingering quad
Sandi - old man calf
Kersten - busted foot

Tha Ballas and Sandi injuries are not unexpected given their respective ages (and how Ballas plays), and Bennell is nothing new. Hill is the mystery, and Kersten I don't know about but it seems like one of those things that happens.

We are boringly average when it comes to injuries.

Based on those numbers the average is 7.7.

So if we correct our list of 10 to just 5 genuine injuries we are actually ahead of the curve.

Blakely, Logue and McCarthy are all available and as mentioned Duman is suspended. Stuart is a concussion but maybe right to play for peel this week. So that means that we are well ahead of the curve.

On the remaining Bennell will never play 1s again and will be jettisoned at years end and Kersten's foot is serious so doubt he will play again. If we see 211 or ballas in the 1s again i would be surprised. S Hill is the only one of the old 4 likely to play in the back half.

With the current team setup, where would Ballas fit, even if he was fully fit again (unlikely)? His only way back is probably a sentimental final home game, and Ross Lyon has shown, more then once, that he's not swayed by such concerns. Sandi will probably play a handful of games, though, if he ever gets fit. He'll be needed soon enough. Kersten's foot injury was declared as possibly career ending last season. Steven Hill - maybe next season. I've given up hope of ever seeing Bennell play top level again.

The problem is, you're making adjustments for the Freo injury list but not other teams. Everyone has players on their injury lists named as a test or even available.

Collingwood, St Kilda and North each have 12 players named but Collingwood have 2 players listed as available, 2 as a test and 1 is on a drug suspension. North have 1 available and 2 tests along with other issues like Daw's problems. The Saints have 1 available and 2 tests along with other issues like Roberton sitting out the season.

If you go and make exceptions for one club, you make them for all and we still end up towards the bottom every week.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Stats on injuries over time are devilish tricky to find. Here’s what I could dig up:
2015: www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.news.com.au/...11413564d9537ded8db1
2017: m.afl.com.au/news/2017-05-11/prelim-fina...the-most-injury-pain
2018: www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r...e_worst_injury_list/
www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.theage.com.a...20180928-p506l0.html

The problem I have is that very little of this is hard data. I feel like our injury list has been one of the worst, and I feel like both Weber and our club doctor need either replacing or some new staff to work with. But, most of what I can fine says we’re doing fine. Experientialy, I feel like this Lyon running game is hard on the bodies (despite being a semi-vocal Lyon supporter). I really wish the AFL collected/released this kind of data more readily, but I think they’re trying to hush up how dangerous the sport is.

We're having a reasonable run of luck at the moment, comfortably below the AFL average for injuries, and with only 3 teams having fewer injuries than we do.

I acknowledge it's not very scientific to apply a lens to our injuries and not the other teams, but given the nature of our injuries - Sandi, Ballas and Bennell's injuries shouldn't be a complete surprise, Sturt is a concussion, and Logue should be available this week - you'd have to say we're doing ok.

That, and the fact we seem to be running out games pretty well, would we count this as limited evidence that our fitness staff are doing ok at the moment?

The problem Morgan is we've had been on the wrong end of a comparative list for four years straight.

That's probably right Hypen, although I think that people are much more inclined to notice these sorts of things when they are going badly than when going well. Getting overall trend data is difficult.

I actually just think we're having a reasonable run with luck at the moment. We haven't had too many knee/ankle injuries that come from blokes landing awkwardly.

Also, we're seeing fewer soft-tissue injuries. I don't have any fitness expertise, but I wonder whether the good fitness base came at the expense of a couple of soft tissue injuiries, and now we're on an in-season training load those have curtailed.

It was often commented on when we were going well.

What we seem to lead the league in is Indefinite return dates. I've always thought the issue is not that we get more injuries it's that we take longer to return injured players to the paddock than other clubs. So when you get a bad run of injuries, they pile up. We've got 4 injured players who we can't put a 4 week return window on, and two who are over a month away.

I've commented before on how well the Eagles run, and I wonder if they just overcooked the training this season and that is why they all of a sudden have lots of foot injuries. Either that or they needed something to blame, because their supporters can never accept that another team may simply be better than them.

It must be a fine balance between getting the very best out of a players body and pushing them too hard and injuring them.

We win again. Four TBC's to Freo and the best any other club can come up with is a paltry two.

I doesn't need to be that fine a balance though, it's not the Olympics.

If I were going to guess I would think that the Eagles problem is that Lathlain is a bit too firm and Fremantle's is that Cockburn has been a bit too soft.

The fine balance is in lawn care.
