Returning to topic...

There's a German word, that perfectly describes why Ross Lyon may have decided to put Hogan in defence:

Its the middield I tells ya. We need to churn some of the guys listed as mids through there to see what we have got. Chuck Bewly in give North a run etc etc. Change the blokes on the bench and have a look see. Do we get Fyfe back this week or is his head still in a moon boot? We have a new list lets test it.

I take your point Hypen, but we need to match up with Cameron and Finlayson, who are both guns. A Pearce can handle one of them – let’s say Cameron - but then who picks up Finlayson in Hamling’s absence? He’s 196cm, so it’s not one of our shorter backs from last week, Nyhuis is only 188cm, and Cox is too slow.

All I’m saying is that if he gets off the leash Hogan has as good a chance as anyone to try and stop him. I don’t know why it’s so heretic to consider it.

Yeti, I only ask about the ‘nobody but Roly’ thing because there is literally no-one on Dockerland who believes that (I think we lost the one poster who might have believed that). I even posted a list last year of coaches I would prefer to have than Lyon. FWIW, currently that list is Clarkson, Dew, C Scott and Fagan as definites, Buckley, Hardwick, Longmire and Beveridge as probablies, and B Scott, Goodwin, Cameron, Worsfold, Bolton, Hinkley, Pyke and Richardson as probably nots.

You’re smart enough to understand the problems with strawman arguments, so I don’t understand why you feel you need to do it. There isn’t one crowd versus another crowd, there’s just a bunch of Freo fans trying to figure out why we aren’t better.

Why? Lyon. That is all.

I'd give anyone else a go, because if they let this team play attacking footy, there are enough of them who can do that, without every single move being mapped out by a muppet.

Lyon is taking them nowhere slowly, and has been for years.

Well, nobody is that closed minded to suggest Lyon is the coach to take us anywhere. But to think that we can be so fixated on a player being a one dimensional player, and not even considering that he could benefit from a run in defence, a chance to straight line, attack the ball, build his touch and understanding of both ends. He is 24 and by no means a fully developed player. Everyone needs to relax...he is a valuable player and the more options, the better for the team and player. It probably wasn't't even Lyon's idea. Sounds too innovative for Rossy.
Hogan is on the way back, one way or another.

More nonsense and all of it completely untrue.

I could easily list the half dozen posters that support roly without fail and you are definitely one of them. Any criticism of the club management or roly results in you:

i. supporting the any action by club or coach
ii. a comment mocking the poster criticising the club or coach and generally making up stuff in the process.
iii. Total absence of any criticism of the loony posters who go nutty over roly to the point of utter stupidity.

You are a known quantity

If your starting point in all this is to win the game, realize the unlikely chance of beating GWS at their home. Do you have a bloke of Hogan's ability running around the forward line or playing back?

A WCE supporting acquaintance was trying to wind me up with chatter about Ross Lyon being nothing but a defensive-minded coach, who was taking Freo nowhere. It shut him up momentarily when I said I agreed, but he went visibly pale when I suggested that the likeliest replacement would be Josh Carr.

Their not at home Manuka is in Canberra. So if you are going to the game tin foil hats are the go. Dont want the politicians implanting voter thoughts into your noggin.

Well, you go in with a plan (haha) and if your team is flexible enough, eg Nyhuis going forward for a four goal game, then you can swap and change as necessary...like all good teams are capable of.
And again I reckon Lyon is as closed minded a coach as I have seen, so I would be surprised any whacky ideas have been his. He is as entrenched in his own beliefs as anyone could possibly be.
I welcome outside the square thinking, as long as the idea can adjusted as we go, in other words not let pig headed pride get in the way of what is best for the team. Realise any benefit or negative and make the changes...in consultation!

Cox was an AA U/18 backman. He's only 21 now. Surely that's a better choice than Hogan.

Agree Randolph, but the aim may be to force Hogan into the play, give licence to attack and mark from defence, as mcgovern is. Cox is quite slow but probably reads the play well from defence. Myself, I want speedier players in the back half. The days of a Johnno wandering down back without a player are over.

But the Hogan in defence thing should be to make him better up forward and a better equipped total footballer. Able to be a swingman if needed. He is the most capable of our talls to be that player.
