TOPIC: Skills v Effort

You can only learn from people that have actually achieved the skill level your trying to aspire to. In our case there is not one coach, including Lyon, that was ever considered a skilled A grade player. In fact one of the ass coaches never played AFL. So until someone comes on board that has a proven track record in this type of training then there will be no improvement. The exception to lack of skill is Walters and Cerra. Today both could execute the short get out of jail kick on many occasions as well as handballs that hit targets.

Where were Hawthorns skills when they got rolled last week in the last qtr 9 goals to 1?

Having good skills will not guarantee that you win every game, noddy. I'm a little surprised you don't know that already.

But having good skills will lead to success overall, something like 4 flags in a decade. I'd call that sustained success.

I'm guessing bottom six every year is success enough for you then?

A high disposal efficiency does not tell the whole story though. Under pressure and at crucial moments is when it counts most. Kick, mark, kick mark whilst playing keeping off is a sure way to boost your efficiency status.

I am an amateur kickboxer. Truth is I’m not very good.

If you watch me fighting a higher ranked person you will see me always giving 100% effort and the other person seemingly cruising. But I’m usually always getting my head punched in and working twice as hard to get a result

That is the difference between skill and effort. I don’t think Lyon gets this simple point and it shows in how we play.

If Buckley can train an American with no football background to play in an AFL grand final you can’t tell me skills can’t be taught

Of course, but the argument being put forward is that somehow our skills are way worse than any other club which I disagree with. Developing side with new players , pressure under real game time and fatigue at any point can all contribute to errors of skill. That doesn’t mean you haven’t got high skills .

Look at Gresham’s atrocious OOB on the full at a crucial time for them.....he was fatigued or needs more skills training?

I don't know about other clubs but I don't think our skills were optimal yesterday. We spent a lot of money on our football department, the players should be sharper than that.

Our skills were woeful at times yesterday, but our decision-making was equally bad. How many times did St Kilda stroll into an open goal on too many Freo players flying and no-one goal side of the contest? I reckon half St Kilda’s goals were scored that way.

And therein lies the rub of training AFL teams, you’ve only got so many hours in the day. It’s not a highly technical individual sport like swimming. It’s a highly technical team sport where you can’t afford to just focus on one skill, or even the many individual skills, but also match simulations, rehab, fitness training and film sessions. I would like our defenders in front of a monitor to see exactly how they let in so many easy goals at least as much as I want them practicing not kicking the ball out of bounds.

As an aside, I do think our goal kicking has improved.

Your answers always revolves around - well it's not an easy job so it's ok to do it poorly.

When a large group of your players fail to execute skills basic under match pressure, and show no improvement in that area over multiple seasons, then you have the balance wrong.

AFL coaches get paid an amount of money which would suggest expertise in their field. If they can't manage a training schedule to get players fit, able to kick under pressure and on the same page about where to stand during a game then what is it that they are good enough at to earn such big money, and why are they considered so difficult to replace?

And while we are on skills vs effort, how do you think Brisbane beat the slime? Except for a small patch in the 2nd half of the 1st quarter they put in enough effort to make sure that the other mob didn't get the time and space to execute their wonderful skills.

Brisbane beating the Eagles three weeks ago doesn't really address the low quality of Fremantle's skills on the weekend.

The entire argument "skills v effort' is nonsense. This is a professional sporting league. They do this full time and they get paid to do it. It's skills and effort. Every game.

Agreed Shane. Just giving Roly some tips for how to play the mob up the road. Not that he needs my help.

I am really shocked by how negative everyone has been after yesterdays game. We won didn't we? We still get the 4 points and sit 3rd on the ladder?

Yeah sure our kicking was deplorable but it was a high pressure game against a team that had 2 wins. We did that all with our skipper going down in the 3rd term. Lets talk about that! Our young pretty inexperienced team steeled themselves after their best player went down and won the game. Our midfield which was for the second half missing 3 of our 5 best midfielders, still managed to win the clearances.

The answer is you need skills and effort. Its not black and white.Yesterday it was effort that got the win. 2 weeks ago it was probably skills that won us the game against North. Enjoy the ride, we look pretty exciting this year.
