TOPIC: Brennan Cox

I generally agree Bizkit. I think Cox has more upside than Tabs, and there is less redundancy with Lobb, but I think Tabs has probably done enough at this stage to keep his job, and I can't see Lyon dropping Lobb, Hogan or McCarthy.

I'd be inclined to give Cox a week at Peel coming off his injury, give Tabs another crack at home, and see where the cards fall in another week.

It's a pretty good problem to have.

You would be mad to drop Cam - his Special Membership picture card is about to come out. Just saying.

It's another weaker opponent with few decent tall defenders for Tabs to compete against. His goal output has been well down on what you'd expect this season with much tougher opponents on the horizon.

The time is far better spent on bringing Cox in and getting him back up to speed.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Biz,

the only reason that Tabs goal output has dropped is because he isn't being played anywhere near the goals. He's being played further up the ground, often being used as an outlet marker.

Happy to have Cox there but like others, he should come back through Peel and not risk reinjuring his leg. The lesser competition will be easier for him to get back to match fitness.

I think Taberner has been fine thus far. Taken some good marks. Brought the ball to ground, never gets out marked.

He's fine.

Agree Hypen, and some people have forgotten pretty quickly that a highlights package does not always show the full picture.I dare say if you did the same with Tabs, he would look pretty good too. Don't forget, Cox looked like a Million dollars in the pre-season last year, but he had some ordinary moments through the year. I still think he is a backman anyway, and we could do with him back there.

Think Cox has to bide his time at the moment....and his time will come. One of the talls will end up with an injury...great that we have competition for places.

Just a sideline on Tabs. Think he"s been good, but yes, lacks footy brain. Does Sam Collins take that singlehanded matchwinning mark if Tabs flew/contested with him. ?

Have a look at replay and watch what Tabs is doing when mark is taken

Dumb!

Yes, the replay shows Taberner having to backtrack towards the contest. If the kick had been sensible it would have found Tab way out ahead of Collins. But no, the kick went to Cam on three, and to their advantage. Shocker of a kick.

Yep..good point Suker....I'm probably being a bit harsh on Tabs...it is more about the delivery. Both instances - Dumb!

I can understand the Tabs is fine, lets stick with him argument but for a team rebuilding, you need to be giving the kids a chance to learn. You need to be looking at the future and how we'll structure up when we're actually a chance of contending. If an older head and a kid are on the same level, you pick the kid every time.

That wasn't a Cox highlight package, that was the game. It didn't even show his big marks or 90% of the things he did. you can go back and watch the game to see him in full flight but he was fantastic and the fact he was featured in basically all of our highlights was reflective of his performance.

On another note, he didn't play last pre-season except a small stint in a match against Adelaide where he picked up 9 touches and no goals so that's not true at all.

He was a 19yo KPF last season carrying our forwardline without much help, attracting the opposition's best tall defender in a system not designed for forwards whatsoever. He was even forced to ruck for periods in most games. He still managed 4.4 marks and 1.1 goals per game. Again, as a 19yo KPF carrying our forwardline.

He has tonnes of potential and after a full pre-season and more time growing into his body, he was showing it before injury. Playing Cox should be a priority when he's fit, more so when we were belted all over the ground last week by the favourites for the wooden spoon.

We were not belted because we didn't have forwards, we were belted because we did not play forwards as forwards. The player most likely to go out for Cox is Cammac, not Taberner, Cox would not play the run-up-the-ground half forward role that Tabs plays. I still think you are overstating Cox's ability, while he is OK, he is no Hogan, and we don't even want him in the forward line.

I also stand by my opinion that Cox will be better value for us as a backman, releasing Hamling to play the role that Johnno and Ibbo filled so well.

Cox topped our GPS numbers in one game last season with something like 14/15km covered. How is he not or less capable of running up the ground, especially given another pre-season behind his young legs? He is far more capable of it and has a better footy brain to know when and where to lead up the ground.

The advantage Tabs has is a couple of cm's and a more mature body. However Cox plays taller than he is and has better hands below his knees so I'd prefer him with Lobb/Darcy the main high ball target and Hogan/McCarthy able to move between playing tall or small. Tabs makes us too top heavy while Cox brings more balance and smarts.

Cox also provides us with an insurance policy if one of Hamling or A Pearce go down during a game, at least while Logue isn't playing. It might have been handy to have him in defence last week in the last quarter when Ryan got injured and A Pearce temporarily forgot how to play football.

I'd still give him a run at Peel this week though.

It's your spot in the team to lose. Schultz has done well and kept Matera out. Cox has to bide his time.

If Taberner takes 8-10 marks per game, that's better than J. Darling most of the time. He just has to stage more to get the frees Darling gets.
