The AFL or any other high profile sport is no place to employ people with known mental health issues. Help them if they become known after employment but don’t employ them if you know there’s a problem.

Mental health issues affect many more people than we know. Being affected should not exclude anyone from employment. Mental health needs to be understood but pigeonholing all as unfit for work is an archaic way of dealing with it.

Okay, has this anxiety issue just popped up since he came back home? Did Melbourne know about it and were helping him get treatment? Have we been getting the same for him since he joined us?
Was their due diligence then in recruiting him?

Noddy, those are discipline issues though. He broke team rules, he should cop that. The anxiety is a mitigating factor but it's not an excuse. People do similar things all the time.

There is a wider point being made by some that Fremantle shouldn't have recruited Hogan because he has a mental health condition. That's where it becomes archaic. The idea that he should be punished any further than his actions is an awful prejudice that mental health groups have been working very hard for a long time to change.

I'm suggesting if you know an AFL player has mental health issues, that your due diligence should as with other medical conditions be taken into account, in my view, that is not unreasonable.

I’m fully behind us supporting Hogan to deal with any issues he may have.
