TOPIC: JLT1: What I learned

Clearly they were trying to get the ball in quicker and exploit poor old Tom Langdon down there but it became one dimensional. I hope Switowski is a low grade strain we need some small forwards.

Then again, I would rather be winning games at the pointy end of the season than the Mickey Mouse ones at the beginning.
That said, I remember when Roly first came to the club, our first half a dozen games were cr*p before the troops got the message and we powered into a grannie.

Win or lose was irrelevant. The nature of how we played that has me concerned.

We need someone in the middle to be 'the man'.

Funny you should say that Shane and not sure if your joking but just listening to champion data on SEN and they said Freo in JT1 were the side that changed most from last year. Caused 38 turnovers inside their forward 50 which was the most of any side and against last years grand finalist. Just didn't have polish to finish it off. They said if they improve in that area then they could be the big surprise packet because all their other numbers were good and made for sustainable football. Also said they were moving the ball up the ground similar to 2012/13 but longer.

I'm not a stats man but they were very bullish on freo so will be interesting to see how it pans out through the year and what sort of improvement there is once the guys play more games together.

Champion Data are always amusing.

When the stats point to something and it doesn't happen, they never question their analysis of the stats. It's always the fault of an intangible, like polish.

My thoughts on that have been that Fremantle take a similar attitude towards statistics and have been actively trying to get turnovers inside 50, as well as goals from midfielders, because teams that win statistically do well in those areas. But those are just indicators, not causes and when you game the system the analysis breaks down.

So Fremantle spent a lot of time trying to lock the ball inside 50, to get turnovers, but they didn't work out the next move which is to score. That's sort of the crucial part. They just kept getting turnovers, then turning it back over, then getting turnovers; until everyone was so buggered from chasing around in the forward line the other team could run the ball out and score.

With the midfielders scoring goals, they would wait for the midfielders to get into the forward line to kick the goal at the expense of using a marking target or a small forward to crumb.

I believe the mathematical term for what they were doing is 'arse about'.

Detailed analysis of a practice match, with some key players out, in very hot conditions, with some new faces, along with a separate analysis of stats, is bound to prove, well, nothing.
One thing for certain, the kicking to the forward line was thoughtless, erratic, unpredictable...horrible.

I was reminded that it's been a privilege to have seen 250+ games from David Mundy in purple. If he was in Victoria, he'd be lauded as a superstar of the comp. He is very under rated.
Brayshaw, Cerra, Cox, Tabs, Lobb, and Tucker all give hope for improvement.
Unfortunately, bombing to a pack of 15 will never work, no matter how many good tall forwards we have. Still not convinced about Logue....

Yeah, Mundy looked really good. Fit and fresh. I thought he looked done at the end of last season.

Mundy also won the toss yesterday - that gave us a 20+ lead at the first break.

What role was Mundy playing yesterday? I always assumed he’d ease into a backline sweeper role as he aged, but he’s never really excelled in that role, and we’ve got enough good players and kicks down there without him. I thought his poise was very useful in the forward line last year, but given we have so many talls down there now, I think what we really need is some speed at ground level, so I can’t see him being most effective there.

That leaves the midfield, and I think we really need him there, but it’s asking a lot to have guy turning 34 during the season to log heavy minutes there. No matter how good he looks in the pre-season, there’s a high risk of burn-out (and injury) if we don’t look after him. Do we need to have him on a minutes/game restriction? Maybe rest him for every other interstate trip or something?

He played through the midfield, mostly in the centre square but sometimes on a wing. He moved real well, looked great. Class above. He's going to have play till he's 43 I'm afraid.

It was a good game for the new group to play together under the new rules.

We’d struggle without Mundy and Fyfe.

2019 will test the quality of our coaching staff.
