TOPIC: JLT1: What I learned

Stacksonthemill,

I'll respond to you as responding to Morgan is just a waste of typing.

What people wanted to see was not a win but some signs of improvement, particularly based around the new personnel. We didn't see any sign of improvement. We saw the same as last year, a lot of effort let down by repeated poor execution. That approach has resulted in us winning 20 games over years while losing 44 games.

There has been no change to the approach and I'm not seeing any sign of improvement with the new players.

First game or not, I can't see any logical reason reason why refusing to change will suddenly one day result in success. If you can explain how that works, we'll all be listening.

I wish I could Yeti, however, I'll start to panic if I see the same old crap come season proper. I see absolutely zero value in these games. Nothing can be taken from them. They are scratch matches, pure and simple. I'd like to be Jezza and think RoLy is playing his cards close to his chest, and is soon to unleash a plethora of coaching wizardry come round 1, but I'll settle for 4 and 2 after round 6. Anything less and RoLy can pack his bags.

Okay Morgan fair enough but in twenty days time they play for keeps.

Still plenty of time to cobble together one of those game plan thingys.

Stacks,

the only value in the these games is adding to match fitness (a bit) and testing changes to see how effective they will be under the changed rules.

You simply do not make zero changes in the preseason and then suddenly have a completely different and more highly skilled game in round 1.

Skills improvement is a long term process but large improvements can be seen very soon after making them a priority. You don't get full value for a couple of years but you get some pretty quickly.

So far, there doesn't appear to be any improvement over the last 3 years in spite of bringing skilled players onto the roster. We don't use those skills to our benefit because our sole focus is to turn them into running machines.

Its a flawed approach

I didn’t watch the game. In fact, it’s probably been over a decade since I watched a pre-season game. They are a poor indicator of success, and I spend the whole time hoping no-one gets hurt. So I can’t speak to the game.

But I would have thought it would take more than one pre-season game to fix the entry problem. Having people to kick to is one part of the equation, but so is team-wide decision making. I think that will take a few more reps.

And Yeti, shall I take it from your comment that you’ll politely decline my suggestion for us to raise the tone a little?

Morgan, you didn't watch the game and then you chimed in with a typical snarky comment about how everyone is stupid but you. You lowered the tone at your first outing.

The problem is when you promise something different and then you don't deliver on something different.

Appropriate for you and for the team. Now let people discuss the game.

Morgan,

if you genuinely want the tone raised, you can start by not continuing the snide remarks as your main contribution.

Wilson came off late in the 4th with a left wrist/hand injury.

We're all stupid, Shane. We're Dockers supporters. But we are nice and we are kind.

I’ll have a go :

1) When pressure tackling is put on the Dockers they crumble
2) Hogan needs more playing minutes - very rusty
3) Taberner chas gone back to not being able to mark the footy (hopefully just rusty)
4) The plan is kick it long and hopefully someone marks it
5) No one CAN mark it
6) Our small forwards are too slow to put pressure on
7) Hughes panics when he is about to be tackled
8) Start was good (thought i’d end with a positive). Maybe they took the foot off the accelerator :)
9) Who cares....it’s a practice match in 40 degree heat.

I like Giro. He just doesn't stop running. Again disposal and decision making needs to improve but worth keeping and playing.

My goodness have you seen a team handball as bad as we did today?

I wasn’t aiming for snarky or snide, I was aiming for pithy. Maybe my entries could also use some work.

There was a whole post discussing the game which I obviously abstained from. This was a post about what it all means, and I think the fact it was our first pre-season game is a relevant consideration. I could have used more words to do that, but I’m trying to keep my posts a bit shorter this year.

But for what it’s worth, I think when you say let people talk about football/the game you actually mean let people talk about football in a way you agree with.

Another snide remark? This is how you raise the tone is it?

Yet again, you are obviously wrong. Stacksonthemill can post a point of view that disagrees with others on here. The difference is he talked about the football, he wasn't snide or snarky and he doesn't pretend to be better than everybody else. (or she excuse me Stacks)

If you want to raise the tone, talk about what happened on the ground and drop the attitude
