Following Brissie’s first up win and LNs excellent contribution, he made some interesting comments;

“It's a pretty selfless group.
There's not one bloke trying to run the show and be the man in there.
It's a pretty even spread.
Guys want to work for each other."

What he said and what he didn't say:
“It's a pretty selfless group. -But I will fix that up
There's not one bloke trying to run the show and be the man in there.-This lack of leadership will be addressed by me
It's a pretty even spread.- Look how much weight I've lost, pass me the knife and the Vegemite
Guys want to work for each other." -The economy is pretty sad up here, nobody has a business, I need Sandi up here to start lawn mowing rounds and Fyfe needs to send his dad up here with the trucks.

It’s a pretty long-winded way of saying they don’t have anyone as good as Fyfe.

I wasn’t aware of these comments WTB.
I think one of the biggest factors associated with the success of both the Tigers and Eagles is a tightly bonded playing group. Since Pavlich vacated our captaincy I think this is sadly lacking. From the outside looking in, I find it difficult to like Fyfe, in spite of him captaining our club and delivering the first Brownlow to the club.

Because of all that success and harmony under Pavlich.

Hypen will get mad at me but Neale is a selfish footballer in that he collects a lot of possessions but rarely takes his time to wait for the best option, avoiding the risk of looking bad. He gets the ball and gives it off to someone, regardless of what would happen next. Great players think more than one move ahead. His stats look great because he plays for great stats. His best games were always the ones where his stats didn't look as good.

For those who went to church on the weekend, something about him having a plank in his eye springs to mind.

B1R1 Just re-read your post. I think it’s pretty clear where he is directing these comments, and I don’t think he will be asking Fyfe’s trucking company to Qld anytime soon.
In response to your contrarian comments Shane, I would argue that Pavlich played a large role in us going from a laughing stock to a team with relevance in the competition. Check in with supporters of other clubs and their views on Pav or Fyfe. Pavlich mostly respected for both football and team ethos. Fyfe most think is a great footballer but a dick.

That's not contrarian. The team was not always successful, we went through a lot of coaches, a lot of personnel issues and a lot of people questioning whether he was the man to be captain. Every pre-season his captaincy was questioned by someone around here. That's not saying he was a bad coach, it's just pointing out that you're misrepresenting what happened while Pavlich was captain so you can denigrate Fyfe as captain.

I think people remember Pavlich more fondly because they enjoyed going to the football when he played. Ross Lyon is a poor coach, who coaches a terrible style of football and, in an attempt to avoid accepting that fact, people look for ridiculous things to blame their disappointment on like Nat Fyfe being anything but a delightful character of the game and a magnificent footballer.

This reminds me of the film highlander. There can only be one.

My thoughts Neale is selfish, Fyfe is a selfish player too. Unfortunately after Pavlich left there was no obvious new captain other than Mundy and he got shafted by Fyfe after a season.

Actually it's more like Game of Thrones without the dragons.

I struggle to remember this debate around the suitability of Pavlich for our captaincy that you speak of. What I remember more during his tenure was the speculation that he may move club.
You may very well be right that Lyon is a terrible coach. I don’t subscribe to this viewpoint. My personal viewpoint is that Lyon has been a very good coach, I am undecided as to whether he remains a very good coach. The style of play that he used to attain that success would appear unlikely to succeed currently as teams have developed different strategies and the AFL has moved to legislate against it.
I am in the minority on this sight, in that I have seen a change in desire around our game plan to move the ball quicker and be more attacking. Granted this has been ineffective and ugly and actually resulted in some horrible scores against. Is this an indicator of an inability to coach or one part of the puzzle?
One of the big questions/criticisms leveled at Lyon is, he has been a good coach of, well developed experienced lists. If we assume that Lyon, played no role in the recruiting over the last three drafts (the time in which the re-build has actually been occurring), he now has assembled for him the building blocks of a competetive balanced team. If this team doesn’t deliver genuinely competitive football this year. I would have move him on. In fact I posted last year that we should have busted our nuts to get Luke Hodge as an assistant to have a position to fall back too.
All of this may sound like a defence of Lyon, I don’t mean it to be, as I have said I am undecided. I tire of every decision or slip up along the way being turned back to the same point.
I believe it is more complicated than that, and merely sacking Lyon won’t fix it all.
I also remember the rumours around discontent underneath Fyfe’s leadership in his first year. I think this position could be one of the factors contributing to our lack of cohesion on the ground. I think I have posted previously tha although I think Nic Nat is over rated as a player his team mates appear to love playing with him, I don’t get this sense at Freo with Fyfe.

Shane, I agree with your comments on Neale, I too have been slammed for taking that view on Neale, many times. That point you make is why I have been of the belief that Neale will not be that hard to replace in our midfield, any player who gets 12 to 15 effective disposals will do the same job.

I had always thought Neale was tradeable, as in other clubs would want him, but of least impact on us.
And Fyfe is our best player, but at times it seems his "brand" is at the forefront of his actions. Watching 5 minutes of that Bob Murphy interview was enough to convince me of that. But, my views are from the outside, with some whispers from within. I hope Fyfe can pull all the group, young and old, along with him to success.
