TOPIC: Neale replacement

Of course Hogan is a gun forward and he will be there more often than not. But in those games where we are maybe needing a spark or mobile marking target, why wouldn't Hogan go up for a burst.
No, I wouldn't want him as a regular mid but as the flexible weapon...that he is.

From one of the AFL.com's articles about Hogan being used in the middle:

"I'm sure we'll see him there at some stage throughout the year. I think you spend a little less energy, it's more contested efforts in the midfield rather than being a key forward that's got to run up and down."

I get the intent of him contesting at stoppages, just not so sure that a key forward must run up and down.
Hopefully Hoges gets to spend a lot of time 30m ahead of a stoppage.

As a midfielder, who is Hogan going to kick it to, himself?

I won’t verbal CC, but my memory is that he didn’t want big goomba defenders crashing into a still growing Pav. Instead it made sense to give Pav a run through the middle where he was the big goomba.

Things have probably changed a bit since then, but I think (and have said) there is merit to that argument with Fyfe in the middle as well.

I don’t know much about whether more running or more jumping and landing is more likely to cause foot injuries, but as Shane points out this is a site of nuance so I’m sure you will appreciate that based the way the game is played these days whether Hogan spends 70/30 forward mid or 50/50 forward mid probably doesn’t change the amount he is running or jumping. Tabs played as a forward last year and probably covered as much ground as most mids and also broke a bone in his foot.

It seems a huge and unsupported reach to allude that by playing Hogan in the midfield more Melbourne’s coaching staff exposed him to greater risk of injury, and we are repeating that risk. Given he previously has back issues, they may well have been trying to avoid big goombas crashing into him as frequently in marking contests.

Did you actually watch any of the games last year, Morgan?

Tabs started out at half back, which led to much criticism on here...and other places. He was moved forward, where he was effective and he injured his foot while he was playing in the midfield. He was very rarely played as a pure forward. Yes Tabs covered as much ground as some of the mids because he was mostly playing as a mid.

Hogan can run, which is needed when offering a lead and he can kick straight on goal. To do that you need to be within the 50 meter area as Hogan generally can't kick longer than that. Playing him upfield is going to reduce the value of him as the forward that we recruited him to be. Otherwise, we should have just recruited another mid.

As for not knowing who does the most running, the information is out there and is readily available if you actually care to look. Its the mids and always has been.

The only reach I'm seeing happening here is the effort to manufacture grounds to disagree with anybody who doesn't blindly agree with the everything the club does.

You'ved Meatloafed my comments, Yeti, coincidence that 2 forwards who were made to take their big frames and play like midfielders buggered up a foot each? I think not.

Would Jeans have played Dunstall as a mid? Would Roos or the Saints coaches have played Plugger as a mid? No, because they wanted them to kick goals. So why are todays coaches trying to reinvent the wheel. Have they run out of ideas? Are they just pretenders? So many questions, and only 2 answers, No (twice), & Yes (twice).

If you are wanting to run forwards through the midfield, you do it with the likes of Walters, Balla's, Cammac or Switkovski.

I'd think about giving you a You Beaut, RM but what the heck does 'Meatloafed my comments' mean.

I would add that larger forwards like oh lets see JK, Darling don't get used as mids. They get used as forwards and they kick more goals than we do most of the time.

I'm sure the theories being applied are all very interesting and sound really good but last time I looked, the team that kicks the most goals generally wins. It's an old fashioned idea that true but oddly enough, it still seems to work a whole lot better than not kicking goals.

Maybe I'm old fashioned. I'm certainly old enough.

I can’t tell if you are exaggerating for dramatic effect, but if you genuinely think Taberner played half-back and midfield last year, as opposed to ‘maybe he wasn’t stationed as deep forward as often as you’d like’ then it’s entirely possible we are operating in two different computer simulations of reality. It would explain a fair bit.

As for distances, I’d love to see those stats. May I please trouble point me in the right direction? The only ones I saw last year had blokes like A Pearce and Cox clocking similar numbers to midfielders.

Ok, first point. Game 1 Port Adelaide. Tabs was started behind the ball from the opening bounce and both himself and Cox played most of the game in defence. Yes, Tabs was played at the centre half back.

He was also played as the backup ruckman. I'm pretty sure you couldn't point to any game where he was played as a pure forward....because there wasn't one.

Snide remarks about different realities won't wash, so you'll need to find a new approach.

Distances run? Get the AFL app. If you're a telstra customer all those stats are provided gratis including both distances run, max speeds and all the whole palaver.
