I guess I'll just have to disagree with most of the sentiment here. I was 20 once. I did stupid things. I'm lucky that the only one that landed me in court was "drinking in a sportsground", to wit, having a beer at a Moove Flavoured Milk concert at Gloucester Park when they were trying to muscle in on Masters Choc territory.
But if I'd had the profile of an AFL footballer, with the opportunities for mischief that brings, and the associated public interest, I'm sure I'd have done things that would mean you guys would not be giving me a job.
So I won't sit in judgement on Montagna. I presume that the people hiring him actually know him a bit, and have made a sound decision.
But go for your lives. Hang him.

No I don't RM. Because if its ethics we care about then I presume that no clubs let bankers anywhere near their operations. And I'm sure that is not true.
I struggle with the difference between things that are bad, and things that are really bad, and when things are bad enough that you don't get another chance. Its a struggle most people don't seem to have.

I was thinking of a bloke who would have been a better fit for the job because......
i. he's very recently retired
ii. has a good knowledge of current players and coaches
iii. has played over 100 AFL games
iv. has a good football brain
v. has coaching ambitions
vi. is well liked by the fans-particularly us, most likely by the players but probably not so much by the coach unfortunately
vii. hasn't been involved in any unsavoury off field incidents

I'm not condoning anything. Certainly not that behaviour. But, I expect that Montagna doesn't either. I suspect, though like you I don't know, that he is sorry that it happened, and that he wishes he'd behaved differently. If he isn't sorry, and doesn't regret it, then I would not employ him.

But assuming he looks back in sadness at what he did, and what he allowed to happen, can we employ him? Or is that a bridge too far?
