You mean not playing, surely

Jezza, what you, Lyon, Wallace, Eade, and a lot more don't understand is that playing to your optimum, and "leaving nothing in the tank" are not the same thing. Playing at your optimum all season, will, hopefully, get your team to a GF. In the GF, with no more games left in the season, you can "empty the tank" without stuffing up your prospects for the next 15 games.

When Nat Fyfe is 32 he will not be as fit or as healthy as he is now, or was when he Brownlow. To put it in terms of someone who uses the word elite far too much and thinks Nike ads are accurate representations of the real world, his breaking point will be much lower.

Most coaches would still play him because they would have factored in that his capacity has diminished but it's still better than their 22nd option.

They will manage his niggles and injuries and what not to keep him on the park because his skill and understanding of the game make up for his diminished ability to get really fit.

In similar fashion, when Nat Fyfe was 19 he was not as fit as he is now and he could not play the amount of football he can now. They still played him. They managed his time on the ground and the position he played in. They rested him when he needed a rest.

So why is the notion of taking that approach with a player of any other age unacceptable to you, Jezza?

Simple, Shane.

It's because the club hasn't said that yet.

When they do (or Roly), he will fully agree with what you're saying

ps So will Morgan

Shane, it would be interesting to get a true and accurate record of the training and gameday workload of players in clubs that have had sustained success over the last 20 years, versus those who have had a year or 2 at the top, and then dropped away until their next tilt at success 6 or so years later. Saints, Bulldogs, Richmond, Melbourne, Norths and Adelaide, along with Freo spring to mind in the latter category.

Ross did say they pushed him too hard though, in 2017....
“"Really in reality, we probably pushed Harley beyond what he needed to be pushed - trying to create something like Superman really," Lyon said.

Shane, are you suggesting the future coaching and training staff should manage 32 year old Fyfe the way the current mob are managing 33 year old Mundy?

Definitely agree that they are pushing him well beyond his physical capabilities, that’s why he keeps breaking down.

Different game, but the New England Patriots just won the Super Bowl with a guy deemed too old to play the hardest position in the game.

Its been well documented that Brady does not train like a 20 Year old, but trains to be the best quarterback. Maybe they should try that with HB and make him into the best damaging forward instead of having him be something he’s never going to be capable of.

The alternative is to get rid of him now because it’s clearly obvious he can’t do what’s being practiced now. You don’t need a medical degree to understand that.

We haven’t got much right in the last three years but some of the recruiting in the last 12 months has brightened my purple horizon!

Relax folks. The young star will be back in 2 weeks. The gurus at Freo have lowered the revs down on Harley and easing him into Rd 1.

These arguments are nonsense. You have to do multiple 100m sprints every quarter no matter what position you play in.

That includes the forward line, otherwise backmen will run off you all day.

Bennell isn't up to it. It's not his fault. People should just accept it instead of trying to blame coach or player.
