TOPIC: AFL-X

I feel like whatever it may have been when it was first conceived, at this point it's being used as a promotion for Marvel, the new naming rights sponsor of the ground it's being played on.

I reckon that graphic is a bit off. I’m not sure he ‘always’ uses the ball to advantage, and while he can jump a bit everyone knows his real superpower is being able to augment his extroversion when required.

Of course you can bet on it.

In this country you can bet on two flies walking up a wall or who will be the Prime Minister for March.

As for AFL-X, it was sold to Fox as part of the TV rights deal. This year its also on 7Mate but if somehow it becomes a success then next I'm predicting Foxtel only. The AFL is definitely making a quid on it now and they have an eye on future earnings.

Its like Twenty20. It makes a motza for the IPL, so the AFL has to try the same

Nah, that's nonsense. Foxtel won't sell any subscriptions because of AFL-X.

Well, they paid the AFL for TV rights and that included AFL-X.

If it's successful this year, then they will sell subscriptions.

If!

The advertising gurus who brought 20twenty to cricket, in need of more dollars, and with nothing left to offer the ICC, they turned their attention to AFL. Gillon & Co would buy the Sydney Harbour Bridge if it was offered to them, so it was not a hard sell.

ALF-X (or ex-AFL) is a bastardised version of the great game that sidesteps the apparently difficult task of finding an oval shaped ground outside of Australia by putting it on a rectangle shaped ground.

Apparently that will make it easier for those countries who enjoy rectangle based sports such as soccer, rugby, water polo, NFL and NHL to have a shot at something new.

Not make any money? You gotta be kidding - those players are just fooling around in an advert circus. No one needs to go, it's just one big moving ad.

Are you clowns still digging in against Twenty20 cricket? Grumpy old bastards.

I didn't say it wasn't to make money, for someone at least, but there's no money in it for Foxtel. They sell subscriptions. It would have to be one hell of a night for someone to fork out $50 a month who didn't feel it was worth it for all the other football.

I bet there was a clause in the naming rights that gives Marvel an exclusive event. And Fyfe is getting a cut of that sweet, sweet Avengers franchise money

Yeah, naah, Shane.

There is money on it for Foxtel. They paid for it as part of the TV rights for footy. They may not have sold subscriptions on the back of AFL-X this year but if it takes off they will do next year.

In the meantime, they are making a quid on the back of selling subscriptions to their sport package of which AFL-X is part.

Channel 7 is making a quid selling advertising and the FL is making a quid on the TV rights deal.

Which brings me back to my original point, the purpose of AFL-X is extra money ala twenty20
