Lyon said if Freo didn’t win a flag by 2020 there would be no excuse. The club turned over most of its list in a few years. This offseason the club landed some very good players in what was its most deficient area of the ground for a while. The President has come out and said the rebuild is over, which I assume means the focus will be on the existing core of players to play a brand capable of winning a flag.

Either they’ve nailed the rebuild and some good things are on the horizon, or the President has cut Lyon’s safety net publicly just as the coach is entering the last two years of his contract (ie, the sackable part). Oh, and they’ve appointed a new Footy GM who could conceivably pull the trigger.

I don’t understand why people who have spent the last five years hoping for Lyon to be sacked aren’t ecstatic about this statement. People have been dining out on ‘sustained success’ forever. Now whenever Freo look a bit shaky they can use ‘the rebuild is over’ as a new rhetorical cudgel to bludgeon the club with.

It seems to me that since we fell off a cliff in 2016 contending for a flag by 2020 has been the goal. To my knowledge the club has never resiled from that. The President’s surprisingly candid comments in a space normally reserved for platitudes seems in line with that plan, and sets expectations reasonably high. Either Freo are successful, or the President gets hoisted by his own petard. And yet, despite that spec of gold in the pan, people are complaining about the amount of sand.

If the President has been inconsistent on this point, I’m happy to be corrected.

I think Alcock inherited the ‘sustained success’ bit from his predecessor.

I had perhaps foolishly assumed this was a discussion about Freo’s on-field progression and our prospects next year. I thought it was interesting that the President was stating on the record that the rebuild was over. For someone who has been accused of not being strong enough (at least on the record) for holding Lyon and the team to account for poor performances, it seemed to be setting an interesting and welcome tone.

I didn’t understand this was yet another free-form gripe forum about Freo’s entire administration.

When they signed Roly to an extended tenure, the mantra was 2020 vision. I’d say that mantra is pretty solid, with the president stating that the dark days are over or words to that effect. We’re on track for premiership success is what I’m hearing. I’m just stoked that all this negativity will slowly fade. Boy or boy it’ll be a great couple of years. Surely the natives will stop moaning.
