Lyon has finally admitted that the players have been overworked to the detriment of skills training. Not just in 2018 either. I look forward to seeing players jumping out of their skin ready to go with skills to match the best teams of the last 30 years. I hope it is not just the normal Lyon waffle that comes out at the end of every failed season.

I accept that 2016-18, were failed seasons. But when you turnover 21 or so players since 2017, there’s a price you pay. So we went to the draft, traded for WA boys, and all this time exposing kids that were probably gifted games. The reality is it’s been 3 years of pain but 3 years or rebuild to the detriment of success. Clearly with better skilled players, there won’t be the need of a dozen repeated sprints, and that’s only in the first quarter. Roly has identified this and the implementation process begins.

jezza,

Clearly with better skilled players, there won’t be the need of a dozen repeated sprints, and that’s only in the first quarter. Roly has identified this and the implementation process begins.

If that can be believed, then you have just pointed out that all the criticism of Roly for those 'unsuccessful' years was correct. Every time skills were raised as an issue, you and the rest of the 'nobody but Roly squad' disputed that and told us the Roly knew what he was doing. Now he's recognised skills as an issue, something others on here have been saying for years, you are praising him for being 5 years behind his critics.

Maybe all he needed to do was read Dockerland instead of other people's chests

I agree with that Bizkit. A Pearce is a good example of someone who hasn’t played many games, but has been a long time in the system and who is a leader of the club already. I would say he plays with more poise than his 40-odd games would suggest.

It goes the other way as well, because a big part of experience is continuity of game style and teammates. Players need to be able to make instinctive split-second decisions. That comes not only from games, but from games together. Our defence and forward line had to figure that stuff out on the fly last year, and our forward line will need to do that again in 2019. At times I expect it will look a little ragged.

People banged on about game plans. He had to work with what he was given, a blue collar team who worked their backsides off. Not a highly skilled team. So got numbers to the ball and extracted the pill and then used it by hand to get it forward. We weren’t a team that kicked a lot. Now that’s been identified, he’s tweaking like most coaching gurus.

As Jezza has said :
Hawks don’t play to many debutants. If they do they would've had to ply their trade in the twos for a significant amount of time.
To be a good team with a good coach you shouldn't have to sack most of the players and start from scratch .
The building of a team is on going all the time . R.L. ran predominantly the same core of players into the ground trying to win a GF to the detriment of the team and the club and for the last 4 or 5 years we can see the results of what he has done . No flag , ripped the heart out of the team .
We have to find a new identity and a new heart .
There is light at the end of the long tunnel but Ross won't be there to see it . IMHO .

I guess RoLy missed the Baby Bummers GF - 15 hundred gamers, what a pile of rot.

Thanks to Mumbles Brayshaw taking one for the team, we had a brief bubble of the media being behind us this year - did we use it well? I reckon we did, but never pushed it far enough.

Thanks for the summaries Mercs, I'm out of town and appreciate the info.

Jezza, no-one would know whether those players circa 2013-2018 had skills or not. The game plan did not allow them to show their skills. Lyon did not manufacture a game plan for unskilled players, he manufactured deskilled players for HIS gameplan.

You’ve all missed the most important part- Matera has come back 2kgs lighter! Who would have thunk it that he just needed 2kgs less weight to turn his career around.

I don’t think the 2kg is the real message. The message is, Matera thought he stunk up 2018 and was determined to be a big positive for Freo in 2019.

A team finishing 13th has made the Grand Final for the last two seasons. I don't think the number of games played had much to do with that.

Everyone has an opinion about team’s age and games experience. Teams like Geelong, Sydney, Hawks and Slime still remain on top as far as that stat is concern and clearly the sustained success that comes with it. Did Freo do the right thing in bottoming out and then relaunch or should they have used another template. It’s taken teams like Melb and Collingwood a few years to play finals. Before our most successful period, playing finals was a rarity. Well if there was hell, we’ve poked our mugs in and had a look. I’m tipping that we won’t be visiting it anytime soon.
