Biz is the guy that can crunch the numbers and balance the probabilities for the best pick in Freo's draft range, not me. But I've been following Ian Hill for a couple of years and reckon he's got the most talent from the last couple of years of WA draft hopefuls - and by a fair margin.

I think we're pretty set in most areas of the ground right now and should be for 5 years at least. So I think there's less panic of bringing in some kid that will give an immediate lift to the team, or someone that fills some gaping hole in our list. Still, if I had a top 10 pick last year I would've drafted Hill (had he been eligible), now that he is I don't feel any different. Cal Twomey reckons he's about pick 17 and Biz reckons the margarine substitute bloke would be a better fit - still, if i had pick 6 and he was there I'd happily give the runt a #29 jumper and shake his hand in welcome. Yep, at pick 14 he would be a bargain.

But what do I know - they say with two Hills on his Mum's side of the family and Leon Davis and Byron Pickett on his Pop's, he might know a few things about footy. Looks like it to me.

I'm with Polly, if Hill is still there at 14, grab him with both hands.

We won't regret it.

Nothing racist in my comment, can’t speak for others.
I’m of Burmese heritage, so the same colour as the indigenous boys.
Also a WAFL talent development coach, so I get to coach the mid west indigenous players and have good working relationships with them.
My point to Polly was talent-skills alone doesn’t cut it, character and appetite for hard work is everything. Clubs do their homework, it’s not foolproof though.

To all you talent scouts out there, is Ian Hill more suited to our Sad Wings of Destiny or Defenders of the Faith?

My two bobs worth. Our first pick at 14 or perhaps at 17, after a couple of sliders should be the best available. I’d be surprised if any of our new draftees will force themselves into our best 22 next year. I think our best recruit in 2019 will be HB. Speaking of god given talent. I’ve got everything crossed that Harley delivers on his promise and whoever gets pick 17 can learn from this bloke.

Hmm, not sure why this thread drifted into racist territory but it seemed to. My only comment was that talent (or genuine genius talent as was mentioned) alone is not enough to take the step up to AFL. There are plenty of blokes who look brilliant at WAFL level but flounder when taking the next step.
With regards Ian Hill I am unqualified to speak. I've only seen him play once (Perth v East Perth this year at Lathlain). Seemed like an extremely talented young bloke but he is very slight. He would need to work very hard at putting on muscle. Otherwise he will be smashed from pillar to post.

It is easier however to make a superstar of a young fella who has talent, but needs to work on his hard worker side, than to make a superstar of someone who has hard worker skills , but needs to work on his talent side.

Football clubs don't have time for coaching footballers, all that time is allocated to the fitness department and the coaches are busy getting MBAs.

I find that the most ‘talented’ players are quite often the hardest workers as well.

I don’t see there is necessarily a choice between one or the other when selecting a draftee in the top 50. Predicting whether they can adjust to AFL life or not is pure speculation regardless of their background.

The recruiters should pick based purely on what they see on the footy field. It is the clubs job to get the best out of every individual after they walk through the doors. Different players have different needs to excel and trying to figure out who will work harder or feel homesick should not really come into the equation. Pick based on ability and ability alone or risk missing out on something special.

I should point out my selections were how I believe the draft will go opposed to what I'd like to happen. Otherwise I'd have Rankine first picked and we'd have Clark (although Hill would be a decent pick up).
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Mine too Bizkit. I'd like to see us take Ian Hill as we do lack some leg speed up forward and through the middle.

Zac Butters will be a solid workman like midfielder and that's why I think we'll take him. Cause that's what we do.

I think Hill can fill a need we have (small half forward) so would be happy to take him although I have some others I'd like first.

Freo have been linked to Butters a few times though and he seems like the kind of person we've recruited a lot of in the past few years. At least he plays a similar role to I Hill and fills that need for us. He just doesn't have the pace of Hill.

I know a fair few teachers who could name kids with plenty of talent academic and/or physical, but the kids home life means they’ll never reach their potential despite the best intentions and effort of the teacher and school.
Just because your talented often means little in regard for o to reaching potential if your home/outside life is dysfunctional.

Listen to any of the player managers or recruiters and you’ll learn where a lot of the focus is on.

Here's the thing about that though. It's usually demographically decided, or at best decided by morally iffy, wealthy white blokes who's previous job was being a footballer.

And there's clearly racial profiling involved. The bloke from Adelaide lost his job because he admitted that.

What they will never believe is that a middle class kid, going to an exclusive school, with well respected parents is the template for a meth addict who will bring the game into disrepute or threaten to set someone on fire or join a bikie gang.
