I hope this is a great sign of Lyon adapting a more attacking style of football, and encouraging his charges to take the game on and play on instinct. The alternative is that there’s an insidious culture of lying baldfacedly to the media about what’s happening and make up, whole-cloth, instructions from the coach to cover up a secret methodology of defense and flooding that no single player or coach has let slip about, but that a plucky band of fans has uncovered.

Read an intriguing article in the HS by a former Saints recruiter John Peake, who from 2007, worked closely with Roly. Proves that those who were and still are are bagging Roly, are off the mark. Though Peake admits that from afar, Roly’s changed his coaching style and seeing him nurture our young talent through is significant since his time at Saint Kilda. He added that Roly demands accountability and that nearly made him a premiership coach if it wasn’t for one cruel bounce. And the Luke Ryan scenario, fair to say his form turned when Blakely broke down and missed most of the second half of the season. I’m not in DL Duffle but, both Blakely and Ryan was tonning up most weeks in fantasy footy until Connor sustained his knee injury. So fair to say I watch players as much as Bizkit does.

That's all well and good but I'm more inclined to listen to BIzkit because the club delists players just because Bizkit bags them. So Ross must rate him.

Losing Blakely shouldn't have effected Ryan, he wasn't playing a defensive stopping role as Ryan appeared to move into later in the season. If anything, it should have allowed Ryan to play more freely and take over Blakely's running role.

Instead, Ryan was often found running back to cover the opposition's best small defender. It appeared to release Wilson a little more to run and carry but i'd prefer to have both Ryan and Wilson running off and attacking.

The point remains, Ryan had no problem attacking when given the opportunity and his intelligent long kicking both last season and the first half of this season was fantastic. Being told to be more attacking seems to either avoid whatever stopped him in the second half of the season and ignore his performance in all games prior to that.

I’m curious, does Lyon or the club get any plaudits for taking a mature-aged player with a reputation for being ‘a bit of a lad’ at pick 66, and helping him become a very good AFL player, or is it simply the case that all success belongs to the player, and any downturn in form belongs to the coach?

Ryan’s deployment does raise an interesting question though, about who our best shut-down small defender is. The last few years Spurr most often took the most damaging small forwards, despite a lack of flat-out speed, but he wasn’t used much as a rebounding player (for good reason). We’ve been blessed by having Johnno as both a wonderful intercept marker and creative rebounder. Wilson is a wonderful rebounder but only ok overhead, and Ryan is exceptional at reading the play, but rebounding hasn’t been a strength. How we structure the backline shapes to be a little more fluid than previous seasons, so fluctuations in the attacking side of Ryan’s game are likely.

I think if there was someone like Toby Greene on the park, I would want Ryan marking him. Asking him to then continually run off half-back at the same time is probably asking too much.

Morgan, I think Ross Lyon is a brilliant tactician and fine mentor. Rosich; a progressive, authentic chief administrator with an inclusive attitude that engenders trust and engagement. Our drafting, well that's been as cutting edge and effective as our game. All the pieces are in place.
