TOPIC: Hogan

Agree Demo. I think we have a deal done with Brissy with Neale but it won’t go through till after Hogan is done. This keeps the Dees away from pick 5. We will give slightly more for Hogan I’m thinking but not much. Well done Belly.

This is where I have a problem. I know i have a lot of problems.

My understanding is that the club want Hogan because he fills a spot that currently needs filling. So why don't we go out and get him instead of every year having to do this stupid macho dance trying to beat another club in a deal?

If a deal isn't done then we don't fill the spot that currently needs filling - but we've spend all trade week trying to squeeze out an extra 4th round draft pick that we don't have time to fill the spot any other way. At which point Taberner is suddenly good enough again.

Both Melbourne and Collingwood are desperate to get Stephen May. Their lack of a good tall defender cost them games in the Finals this year against Weagles tall forwards, possibly the premiership in Collingwood's case. Melbourne is a good chance of weakening it's stance if we hold firm on our Jesse offers in order to get May.

I’m glad we just didn’t get the deal done the first year we chased Cam McCarthy. Our first round pick and a future first round was offered.

Have a look at the way the Hawks are trying to get both Wingard and Scully. All they’ve got atm is pick 15. Freo have set a benchmark with the Weller trade last year. Anything less wouldn’t be a good look on Belly’s CV.

Well that's the point really, there's too much ego involved. It should just be a series of business transactions, not a ******* contest.

I have a feeling that Melb value May above Hogan at this point and are desperate to get May. We are in a strong bargaining position. We should do the picks deal with Adelaide on the basis of getting 5 for Neale and use 8 + 23 to get Hogan. Melb are desperate, they will take that. Go Belly time to get things done.
This would leave us with 11, 13, 30, (32 in the Neale deal?) 49, and 80 to get Lobb and Langdon. We can also use future picks if needs be to get L & L. That's a highly improved position relative to where we started - well done Belly.

I don't think we have ever done well from trading away a first-round pick. There is natural goodwill associated with players that you draft, which is rarely afforded to players that you trade in - especially if the price is high. Jesse Hogan is potentially an excellent player, but since he joined Melbourne he has missed more than half as many games as he has played. On that basis alone he is not worth two first-round picks.

Shane who did we do the stupid macho dance previous years and didn't get the player?
I didn't think it was our dance moves made the other club and player run to the hills.

On that basis then LN is worth 2 first rounders. Though the media seem to think otherwise. He’s going to Brissie with no history of medical issues, 2 x Doig, 2018 AA squad and the world thinks Freo are playing hardball. WTF. The Worst I might add are fueling the fire. But that’s no surprise.

Shane,

I'm not convinced that it's all some kind of chest beating going on.

You would hope there has been an assessment of where we are and what we hope to achieve over the next 1, 2 & 3 seasons. Then you have to assess what a player like Hogan is likely to contribute and therefore how much he is worth to the club.

Then you have to decide whether you can pay for that and what you have to give up to pay for that. Much as many people would like to get Hogan, myself included, it may or may not be worth selling the farm for him.

You would hope that this is the process that is occurring. O don't know if Bell is the right man for the job at this point but he's new and you have to give him time to produce or screw up before you can assess that.

Meeting Melbourne's stated price is probably too much of a reach anyway.

So it seems the whole football world, AFL writers, former players and other sports journos thinks we should pay overs for an injured forward and accept unders for our bullet-proof, dual club champion?

What a surprise? Not.

The cracks are already appearing with Melbourne as initially they wanted two high, first round picks for Hogan (I’ll, rather kindly, call that an ambit claim) and now they say they want another late first round pick to go with our current offer of pick 11. I also think our initial offer was low ball but that’s how this game is played.

Hogan has genuine reasons to return to his native state (though I’m sure Nissy would disagree as he doesn’t want to go there) following several years of hardship in Melbourne with the loss of his father, his own cancer battle, etc.

LN wants to go to BrisVegas to chase money & the Captaincy - for mercenary reasons, if you would.

So in those circumstances who should be expected to pay overs? Brissie or us? Clearly Brissie.

Whether Beams leaves or not makes no difference to how desperate they are to secure LN. Should Lachie go public he only strengthen Freo’s hand just like Weller last year. All this talk of him leaving via FA next year is also BS. He’ll be a RESTRICTED free agent - so he can’t just walk as some in the medja and on here think - so if Freo match the offer Brissie will still have to trade for him.

I feel no empathy at all for Cowboy and his desire to leave. He’s in contract and can be kept to it if push comes to shove.

The same could be argued in Hogan’s case, except he’s looking to come home for family & personal reasons, will leave when his contract ends next year and there is no FA compensation in play for Melbourne.

Fair dinkum, some of you need to take a Bex and have a little lie down.

Just because we’ve unsuccessfully chased a few forwards (most of whom did nothing after rejecting our overtures) and successfully chased a few forwards who did little for us - we should sell the farm in order to get two locals who have both nominated us as their destination??

Bollocks to that.

For those who have, let’s say, very little confidence in Steve - the next week will make or break him. If he stuffs this up and we lose LN for unders but pay overs (or worse, miss altogether) Hogan & Lobb - then you’ll be looking for a new escaped goat this time next week.

Stuffing up in the temporary role of List Manager would almost certainly cripple his CEOship and another senior off-field post May become vacant.

But I’m as sure as hell Belly doesn’t want to go the same way barely 2 weeks into his new job - and on he alone I have faith we’ll all be dissecting on here next week how 2 years in a row the Docker’s came out on top in Trade Week.

The alternative would just confirm the naysayers view we are a hopeless club, run by idiots with no genuine plan in place.

See, everyone’s a winner!!?
