I'm somewhat sick and tired of the trope that Freo tried and can't land big-fish forwards. As far as I'm aware, we tried for:
Travis Cloke - in his later years when his power was diminished. Verdict? Thank goodness Freo didn't get him.
Mitch Clarke - apparently, we had him in the bag, but he changed his mind at the last minute. Subsequently had heaps of more important issues to contend with. Verdict? Thank goodness Freo didn't get him.
Cale Hooker - great backman, but would have been played out of position if sent forward permanently. Not the answer. Verdict? Thank goodness Freo didn't get him.
Jack Reiwoldt - terrific talent, who's blossomed in the past couple of years after an attitude-adjustment. Verdict? Would have loved to have had him in Freo colours, but let's face it, he's a Tigger through and through. Never would have come, so it's a moot point.
Jeremy McGovern - premier intercept marking backman in the AFL, and would have been played out of position if sent forward permanently. NicNat's knee meant money freed up for Weagles to offer him a big payday. Money being equal, he was never going to come to Freo.
Unless I've missed anyone, I don't think there's evidence to say Freo's failed at chasing and getting that monster forward. And, as pointed out above, thank goodness some of those mooted recruitments never eventuated. I hope this puts to rest this notion once and for all.
Were there any I missed?
