TOPIC: Hogan

If I were Bell I'd forget about Hogan. This is a classic example of "opportunity lost" for what we can pick up with pick 5 in this draft... or even if we offload pick 5 to Adelaide for 8 and 16 (or 21). What sort of player could we get with those picks?

It won't cost $900K per year to sit on the rehab bench with the risk of never getting on the park.

What we want is to walk away from the draft period with players ready to go from day 1.

If Hogan was a 24 year old Lance Buddy Franklin still under contract I would understand Melbourne's stance.
The guy kicks only two goals a game and Melbourne wants him gone. He hasn't impressed me.
Lance should retire in the forward line of Fremantle even in a walking frame he would still be a force.

As a club in a clearly articulated 5 year rebuild and approaching the third draft - we had to retain a high draft pick, irrespective of player trade movements, to bring more high end talent to compliment Brayshaw, Cerra and Logue.

It was a stroke of genius swapping picks with PA that effectively gave us pick 23 for next to nothing - in terms of draft points, which is the determiner in pure pick swaps.

That pushed our first pick out to 11, but I think the club knew pick 5 from Brisbane was coming once they improved their offer for the little mercenary.

It is that pick 5 we must keep - unless a swap with Adelaide gives us the ability to get Jordan Clarke and Ian Hill. I defer to Biz on the best draft prospects for us but Cal Twomey’s latest Phantom Form Guide here:

m.afl.com.au/news/2018-10-14/cal-twomeys...m-form-guide-october

has Clark at 10 & Hill at 17. They’re the two highest ranked West Aussies (something plenty on here have been calling for us to focus on) and whilst neither are KPP, I’m not sure with the imminent acquisition of Lobb - in addition to our exisiting, developing talls - we need to spend a high pick on one (or two) bigs. The highest rated King, Max (4), is overcoming an ACL and whilst his brother, Ben, (6) can swing to either end - the ‘go home’ factor is an issue. Especially when they only weigh 85:86 kg at 202cm tall, they’ll probably need a few pre-seasons in the gym to become really dominant. About the time Vic clubs will start circling.

Happy to hear Biz’a thoughts on some of the other high picks up for grabs but we desperately need an x-factor, small forward and Hill brings that. Clarke could slot straight into Blakely’s spot off half-back, when he goes in to replace LN - and could even move into that inside-role himself, in time.

Jon Ralph from the HS, "DOCKERS’ HARDLINE TRADE STANCE A LOSE-LOSE". He write's, FREMANTLE feels particularly aggrieved about being painted as the new Essendon of trade week but if the Dockers are unable to secure Jesse Hogan, it could have dire consequences for the club’s future.

This is bigger than Ben Hur. Is Hogan the saviour? Does everyone in the AFL really know how to fix Freo's woes except the FFC. Is the FFC a basket case? Are we in fact worse than Carlton, Suns, Brisbane and the Saints. Shouldn't we be afforded assistance by the AFL similar to what the Blues and the Suns received only a couple of weeks ago. So many questions.

It's funny, about three months ago I posted how Hogan compared to a fit Taberner wasn't too big of a difference. That maybe he is slightly over rated.

And I got smashed by you all. Funny how many seem to agree now.

Don't agree with the Tabener/Hogan omparison but do agree with your comment Hypen.

A top ten goal kicker who would easily have finished higher if he was able to play finals has all of a sudden become an absolure turkey, massive liability and completely over rated.

I don’t doubt Hogan’s talent but given his injury, and that Bell has cooled since his medical at the club, seems maybe I trust our medical staff, or Melbourne hacks. Without arguing that either have a completely clean record, I’ll stick with our medical staff. If we get him, and I still hope we do (I think), then let the price reflect the risk. This is Belly’s first trade period and draft, so I think I’ll him get to work.

When you are buying, your posture is that you highlight the deficiencies even when you like the product.
When you are selling, you only highlight the benefits of your product.

For the FFC, this is a purchase (Hogan) and a sale (Neale).

It is not about emotion or desire or love or slander or desperation or peer pressure or media pressure or supporter expectation.

It is about achieving the very best outcome of the sale and purchase - solely for the benefit of the FFC.

Big 3 days ahead.

Why would we be cautious after picking Harley Bennell? I’m happy with cautious and Belly being in control.

I can understand the reluctance due to the foot injury but to say you don't rate him because he only kicks two goals a game doesnt make sense.
Firstly, we've never had anyone in our club history manage two goals a game.
Secondly how many players can you name that manage more? Josh Kennedy only has a slighly better average that is still under three goals a game, so that would mean you wouldn't rate him either.

I still rate Hogan and want him. I just think the price originally asked of pick 5 & 6 was too high in this particular draft. This was effectively saying Neale plus King. With no more participation in this draft. In essence if we gained Hogan and lost Neale our list rebuild was complete.
Unlike others here I like Lobb as a presence forward providing strong back up for Darcy. I am not convinced about Apeness and I think he gets a game ahead of Cox.
The strategy the club has taken is one that appears in line with a five year rebuild, and if Brisbane improve their offer we may still very well get Hogan this year.
If they don’t it looks like it is going to be difficult for West Coast to pry Kelly out of Geelong this year. We are highly likely to have a higher pick than them next year so they will need to keep this to secure Kelly.
If Brisbane don’t improve their offer. Neale is a professional he will play out his contract at a high standard. I don’t see us improving much next year. Lachie leaves as a restricted free agent we receive similar compensation as Brisbane’s current offer.
We don’t know what conversations were had with Hogan in his visit to the club. He may be happy to play out one more year with the Dees. If so he plays next year for Melbourne hopefully kicks 40-50 proves his body is right we give up two first round picks.

Go online and see the The Harry High Pants Lloyd article about Hogan and he's worth a million. Stating he is valuable enough commodity to enter the elite group of players being paid more than $1 million a season.SO WHY WOULD ANY CLUB WANT TO TRADE HIM??? Also have a look at the video showing highlight of goals this year. NOT ONE was a contested mark which Kennedy is so impressive. The goals where Medhurst like from the boundary, not a mark in sight and most were by getting the the ball 10m out of goals and kicking a wimpy kick through the sticks against the Suns and St Kilda backline chaos.

Yeah mac, I couldn't care how wimpy he kicks them as long as he's kicking them.

I think Melbourne's original asking price as 5 & 6 as well as a player was way too high.

I don't know why Bell has cooled on Hogan but I'll wait to see how things pan out before I declare him a dud or a messiah.

I still think getting Hogan at the right price has massive advantages for us but so does our participation in the draft. It's a matter of opinion where the relative values lie.
