TOPIC: Lobb et al

My young bloke trains at the the same gym as a few of the Dockers.

Darcy, Sheridan and Logue were all in today and he said Logue shoulder lifted more than Darcy!! He also free pressed 60kg I think.

With that sort of strength and pace to boot, there’s a lot to look forward to with Logue.

I also hope Sheridan is retained as he played his best footy for us this year in that high half-forward role, but that will depend on who else we pick up. Hogan & Lobb won’t squeeze him out but TLangdon might. Still, all the chatter is about Langdon going to Sydenee or staying put at the Pies.

I get nervous when Tabs rucks, because he doesn't have the combination of body type or technique to be good at it, and he's too valuable as a forward to risk with some goomba taking out his PCLs. I feel the same way about Lobb.

Despite having 86 first round picks gifted to them, GWS still couldn't execute a plan to replace Mumford when he retired. Poor Lobb was asked to do too much rucking. Anything more than 30% and he's being wasted.

I too am keen to see Logue in action. And while he may read the ball well, he certainly doesn't read the play well. But if he gets better at reading the play he could be fantastic (but so could Folau).

A few 20 year olds read the play well. Most don't. It comes with experience. And training.

I know a few people project Logue play in the midfield, but when I look at our backline I see a bunch of really smart football players. Pearce, Hamling, Wilson and Ryan are solid old-school footyheads who know how to the play the game. I think we need a loose cannon down there, and very much hope Logue is that loose cannon.

He has the size, speed and athleticism to take on a game. Let the others focus on boring footy stuff like positioning and defence, and give Logue the simplified 'see ball, get ball, hoof ball long' directions and see what happens. Once he gets that down, give him the amended version of 'see ball, get ball, see if you can get it to Wilson, if not hoof ball long'.

And having a system that makes sense.

I hate the abuse that word proactive has been subjected to, but as a guiding principle it shits all over reactive.

Most draftee's read the play well actually. It's those drafted as athlete's who tend not to and often never will.

It's much easier to train someone how to keep running than an athlete how to find the footy and what to do with it. A footballer doesn't have to run as far either, they know where to go.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Hence Haselby, Sam Mitchell, Mick Barlow... plodders who only needed to plod, because they were already in the right place.

I'm going all out here, and bringing in the Z:

Morgan, we need some "hoofee's" down the ground, for the "hoofer" to hoof it to.

To Tab, Lobb, Cox, Walters...you know, the guys in the forward line. More intensity in the middle and getting the ball moving quickly should see us be able to get it down there before they move up to the wings.

The only way we can do that, Suker, is to win it at the centre bounce. If we lose the centre bounce, our forwards are under strict instructions to beat the footy to the defensive 50.

Yep Raggy, too often we saw other sides waltz out of the centre and score. When we do win the centre clearance we don't usually capitalise. The best teams do. Some expected improvement from young mids and very good seasons out of experienced group will hopefully count for something...even, as you have espoused many times (and I agree), our style and seemingly ultra-defensive bent makes us look very laboured. Hopefully the players can work through it. I know it sounds a little hopeful, but hey...sooner or later you gotta hope.
