Simpson couldn’t win them a GF in 2015, 2016 or 2017.
It took a year of having Mitchell guiding them on field and then from the box yesterday to get that win yesterday.

Who cares. He's got one now and he's got a better % coaching winning record than Roly to start with.

Lyon hasn't won us or anyone a flag and his assistants wouldn't get a coaching gig anywhere else

Even more disappointing is no team kicked a 100 or constantly held a forward line!

Maybe I'm wired different than other footy supporters. It's not that their GF victory makes my club look hopeless in comparison at all - I never chose Freo because they were a winning side, not even close. No, what destroyed my faith in the redemptive qualities of football was the smug assurance on the face of those knobbers leading up to and after the win.

The shot of that ex-Foreign Affairs minister lapping up the free junket busting hospitality and praise of the right wing political press for being 'one of the winners' when she did absolutely zero for James Ricketson or Julian Assange, the Rohingya refugees, the Palistinians, Trumpisms or any of the known moral dilemnas that we needed to take a stand on as a nation over the past few years instead of ignoring. Nope, there she was smiling smugly in her free seat while her boys did the job on the field.

That hammered it home to me (as if I didn't know it before) - that brutes with power were always going to maintain their position at the top, irrespective of whose jaw they break on the field, how they control the media or any of the plethora of outrages they have perpetuated out of their WAFC shell company. They run this state and they want everyone to know it.

I wish things were different, that this would simply be just a matter of enduring the footy off-season months putting up with their gloating. But it isn't, this isn't the end of the world as we know it - this is a reification that the world isn't going to get any better. It just got a whole lot worse - that's their new stadium with their flag waving above it - everyone else can just bugger off to some ghetto somewhere.

I don't want my footy club to be like them in any way, shape or manner. We're better than that - way better, in the past we've stood for that. But we've got to collectively stand up against them and prove it to everyone.

I think the most galling thing for me is that the footy gods seem to favour some teams to the exclusion of all others.

WC just seem to have things fall their way - this year in particular. Look at their 10 week winning streak. Against us in the first Derby, we lost Walters (a week after losing Tabs) then the game. Against Geebung they were cooked until about half a dozen Cats broke down and they were over-run. Same applies to the Port game later in the season.

One, just one, of those games goes the other way and WC travel in week 1 of the finals.

Then to top it off, despite missing 3 critical players, they get a shot for goal late in a GF (that should have been paid a blocking free kick) from 3 rows back in the crowd and Gaff’s replacement slots it.

Even when the Footy Gods take away from WC they give something straight back - often better.

The saying ‘life is not fair’ was coined by those on the other end of defeats like yesterday.

I don’t know what the magical answer is to the question how do we win a flag - but the harsh reality is that mob up the road know it - and how. In 32 years they’ve averaged a GF every 4.5 seasons and a flag every 8 - oh, and they’ve missed finals 9 times in their history. We’ve only played finals 7 times in 24 attempts.

We can argue they were a State of Origin team initially, then won a flag as drug cheats but yesterday they came from 5 goals down to beat an MCG tenant.

I’m not about to slash my wrists or drop my Freo membership or those of my kids as a result. If supporting a club is based purely on winning flags - 17 clubs a year would have zero supporters after the GF.

Resilience is what I will fall back on - the true and defining characteristic of a Freo supporter, IMHO.

I won’t seek to destroy the club like some jaded ex- who trashes the house on the way out. If I felt like that I’d move on and focus my attention on something that had a far more positive outcome.

But I sure as hell expect my Club to pull out all stops and to stop at nothing to get us back into finals contention. After yesterday, if we don’t make the 8 this year then I don’t see Roly being there for 2020.

Sometimes it’s the greatest adversity that brings the greatest rewards, so on that note I’ll kindly ask the footy gods to shine on us like they did the Bulldogs, Richmond & (almost) Collonwood the past few years and let us taste the glory.

Polly, Australia is the Freo of world politics. No one gives a stuff about what they say, or think.

But make no mistake, everyone thinks their head coach is a joke. No matter who it is.

Next year could be even worse than this year if they go back to back which is a distinct possibility. Throw in the WAFL Gf if they have their own side in the comp and which will no doubt play the same way because of they way the manage things. Don't want to think about it, it's too depressing.

West Coast don't run the state. They run a football club in the AFL. They have a contemporary coach and game plan. They make sound draft decisions with the future in mind. There's no conspiracy here. Just really sound administration and leadership.

I'll give you an example. Last year they lost two super midfielders and were expected to load up in the draft with mids. But knowing how hard it is to get quality key talls and small forwards they went Allen, Brander and Liam Ryan. They did that knowing there will be plenty more mids in the years to come available.

Compare that to Morgan and Bond flapping about how hard it is to draft key forwards. They solved a problem before it became a problem. How long did we have to replace Pav?

One of the most applicable and useful 'themes' / mantras / sayings that I recall from my sporting life - ....many moons ago - was that, 'You make your own luck"!

Think its pretty applicable & indicative of the Eagles history and ours. Yep, they definitely got a better 'leg up'at the start compared to us, and that has carried them a long way...and created the ability for them to create 'powerful trading / list positions.

That fact accepted, they've had relatively few 'stuff ups' along the way. Yep...they've had dodgey culture issues... but a premiership every 12 years suggest they get on top of their issues and manage things pretty well.

On the other hand, well might we despise some 'rotten luck', but I cant - for the life of me - claim that most of that was self inflicted. We have made some 'interesting'list management decisions over the years and,... well, ...have we beem good at 'making our own luck??"

No, Polly, not for one minute do I 'want to be them', but its hard not to be envious of their 'sustained success', which at the end of the day, is clearly a result of pretty good club management.

We have struggled, to put 'that part' together....and we need to do so pretty quick.
