I was surprised to read that the club is looking to move Bennell on.

Perhaps Bell didn't agree with the contract extension or maybe they've decided his leg issues are not manageable. It seems odd to do this just after giving him another year so perhaps SEN have their wires crossed.

Watch this space I guess but it's disappointing if true. What might have been....

He did say it would be a feather in his cap if he could keep Neale at the club. When The rumour first started Whateley linked the move to Bennell.
Hmmm

DtbS,

So far it's been a rift with Fyfe, a rift with Roly, a rift with Bennell....does Neale actually get on with anybody?

I'm not sure there is much in these rift rumours but I will say that so far, Bell seems to have some idea of what he wants to achieve. It's going to be interesting watching what comes out of all this.

Most of AFL media seems to have some sort of agenda, so you get a lot of stuff that turns out to be noise and little substance. It's wait and see time

Bell needs to reign in his list manager. We're in year 3 or 4 of a rebuild but you never really get the feeling that there's a plan.

Something like going after Lobb. He's a very good player and he'd be great to have but we kept Sandilands on the books because they thought the young blokes needed another season. Lobb has got another 10 seasons in him, so all that rebuilding of the ruck stocks was a waste, plus we're paying for Aaron Sandilands when we don't need him.

It's a similar thing with Hogan. A month ago Taberner was the answer to everything but if we get Hogan, Taberner is back at Peel.

I realise things change and opportunities present themselves but I feel like they're making this rebuild up as they go along. I don't think they've got a picture of what a rebuilt Fremantle team will look like.

'but I feel like they're making this rebuild up as they go along' yeah well you would wouldn't you. Its a plan and the plan changes depending on circumstances. Just bring in some more talent.

Shane, it’s the 2020 mantra. The rebuild is over. Finals in 2019 is non negotiable. They’re bringing in the Calvary. If Neale stays, not sure how Hogan gets to us unless Rosich pulls a rabbit out. If Neale goes then Bell has to find another feather.

Shane your bitterness with Freo continues to know no bounds.

A massive part of any rebuild is filling your list holes with players in the right age bracket and with the needed skills to rapidly move you back up the ladder. You can’t do it all with young draftees, as that is basically doing a GWS or Suns in there 2nd or 3rd year.

We have successfully recruited Brad Hill, Nathan Wilson, Cam McCarthy, Joel Hamling, Brandon Matera. So if you added potentially Jessie Hogan and Rory Lobb you jump the team forward at least 2 years. Hogan, Lobb and Tabs up forward would mirror the crows Walker/Lynch/Jenkins structure with McCarthy in the McGovern role. That allows Cox to move into a defensive role with Pearce and Hambling. Conca can then either take Blakely role off the HB line allowing Blakely to move permanently into the midfield or the two rotate. Throw in say Bailey Smith from the draft and your back in the eight next year and the top four in 202!

Shane,

I have commented before that our list management / rebuild plan seemed a bit haphazard. We didn't seem to know whether to concentrate on the draft, trading or whatever.

With trading, it seemed that we were chasing anybody willing to come to us.

Our delistings seemed even less explainable most days.

That might be changing. Bell seems to have some idea of what he's wanting to do and I don't think it's Rosich calling the tunes.

It might be a bad idea that Bell has or it might be really good but it's way too early to tell at this point. The changes to the way we do things would probably take time to become clear.

I'm watching with some interest to see what he's up to

To have a plan is a good thing. To stick rigidly to that plan despite circumstances changing is dumb. Availability of players you feel will strengthen your list are some of those changing circumstances.

Shane, rebuilding plans are dynamic. I don’t think Brisbane, two years ago, had a plan to get Neale while he was under contract. I think they turned a little bit of a corner last season and realised they might be able to fast-track things by trading an early pick for players in their mid-20s, and Neale fitted their profile, they had a ping, and he took the carrot.

Similarly, if we had a plan to attract Lobb a year before he was out of contract I would say that was a bad plan. His availability only came about because GWS found itself squeezed for salary. We probably thought we would have a crack in 2019 when he was out of contract, hence the need to keep Sandi around for another year. I suppose we could have made 265 game club legend Aaron Sandilands – who has given his all for Freo – wait around for months while we decided whether we absolutely needed him, but then you would have complained about the way Freo treated an admirable servant of the club. Or complained even more bitterly when he left for a one-yaer deal to West Coast.

As for not getting Hogan because of Tabs, you know they can play in the same team - in fact I think they'd be great. As far as criticisms go, I think you're really reaching there.
