TOPIC: Ring the Bell, looks like it's official

The argument about whether Bell should have got the job is secondary to the argument about who actually controls FFC. While we are subject to the wishes of the WAFC, we are severely compromised in being able to make sure the correct process is followed and the best man for the job selected. If FFC and its members had control of the club, Rosich, Harris, Lyon and Bond would have been gone long ago.

The AFL (through Demetrio) was very quick to jump in and threaten Freo with all sorts of sanctions in our time of struggle when we had a President and coach who had the best interests of the club at heart, and who were putting in place a way forward, but are very silent on these issues at the present time.

The short answer Bizkit is I don't know. I guess it depends on the timing. Certainly the Bell rumours started not long after the announcement Bond was leaving.

There are a few explanations. If you were inclined to think poorly of the club, then you might interpret that as Bell being tapped on the shoulder and then a sham process that followed.

If you were inclined to think well of the club, then the club and Bond might have agreed that the search for his replacement would be conducted and completed before his departure was announced to allow for a seamless transition. The gap between Bond's departure announcement and Bell's formal appointment was likely to give Bell and the club time to get their own affairs in order.

I have no idea which version is closer to the truth. You'd have to think Freo were pretty incompetent to only start a recruitment drive after they had announced Bond was leaving, but there are plenty of people comfortable assuming that level of incompetence. There's plenty of evidence to suggest the club aren't faultless when it comes to running a footy club.

So if you think positively about the club, you assume Bond had decided to leave his role well before it was announced and the club was under pressure from the Geelong game. Then you give them the benefit of the doubt that as part of their process for replacing him, they decided it would be best for Bond to announce he was leaving at the end of the season.

As a result, giving the incumbent less than a month in the role before the trade period and then draft opposed to finishing out the season and related post season management decisions on coaches, players and staff?

Or if you think negatively, Bond went as a result of horrible end of season losses and they scrambled to get one of their mates in the job without any proper process. It was leaked and they made up some BS about searching for a replacement when it had been made quite apparent they already had Bell earmarked for the role.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

It was reported on the Freo website when Bond announced he was 'stepping down' that he was continuing until the end of November to support the transition. Either he's actually there to support the transition, or he's on extended gardening leave. Again, it's hard to know from outside the club.

Bond did say that he had "been in discussions with Steve Rosich for some time about the best way forward for myself and we agreed that the time was right to announce my departure today." Maybe he was lying about that. There's a bit of face-saving that happens at these times, but normally if there is an aggrieved party the truth comes out.

I supposed Rosich could have walked into Bond's office and fired him on the spot with no plan B, but it doesn't seem to line up with Bond hanging around for 3 months.

It lines up well if his 'retirement' package was large enough to encourage him to play along.

This may or may not have any bearing on Belly's role at Freo, but almost every shortish bloke I've come across in my life seem itching to beat someone up.

I struggle with the concept that Bond hanging around until November will help the club. The story stinks from that point on.

Say what you like about Rosich but he writes a tight contract.

Speculation that Bell is shopping HB around. Or a financial settlement is on the table for him to have pulled the Freo jumper on for the last time. So, the footy boss has started ringing his bell loudly. This scenario is not ideal for all concerned.

I think everyone was surprised that Bennell was given another year. The brief snippet on the afl website trade talk says Bennell missed the freo best and fairest count holidaying with his partner in Japan. If there’s inklings of disharmony at Freo the removal of non team players is a start.
Bell might just be the man to get Freo back on track.

But if anyone still thinks ours is a well run football club who know exactly what they are doing, I think Medibank will cover the gap for your treatment.
