TOPIC: Ring the Bell, looks like it's official

DL have been calling for change in the last 3 years, so much so, the media jumped on the band wagon. Belly’s appointment is the first step and yet there’s debate about the appointment. I’m sure many in your respective professions have had changes that you don’t like, but you suck it up and see. The seat isn’t warm yet and the blades are out. For Belly’s sake, let just see what he can deliver. He’s probably got better credentials than most of us on here, to run a football club, never mind the fact that he could also play the game better than most on here.

Just wondering why some think he would be good in the role. What’s his experience as a head of football?

What background are you looking for? The GM of football ops for East Fremantle?

The same question could’ve been asked when Bond came to Freo, WTB.

Given that there is no evidence of a height restriction on Football Managers, why don't we get BBBB Hall for the job? He would have no trouble sorting out the off field problems.

I wasn't offering better options, Morgan. I was stating the obvious about how poor the selection process was.

If this is how the club make major crucial decisions, how do you reckon they deal with the little things.

Just curious Shane, what experience did you have running a football supporters website before this one?

(I think you do a good job by the way)

We shouldn't be snobs about where good ideas can come from. Cold professionalism can be just as harmful as naivety. From what I've seen from Bell, he's extremely passionate about our club and if I'm balancing that against length of cv, I think I'd go with that.

A good choice, looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

I guess another worry could have been that nobody else was interested in going there.

It is a bad look. The best the club could do was grab an ex player that has spent some time in the media and has no experience running a footy program. Comparing it to setting up a website is a nonsense. Top AFL clubs are high stakes, high profile, high pressure, multimillion dollar operations that require skillful and experienced professionals. They aren’t places where you put the work experience kid in charge. Do we really think that Steve and Dale have a appointed an insider without going through a process in order to get fresh ideas or cutting edge advances? All this does is shore up the status quo.

Steve is our CEO. That in itself should prove that there's nothing particularly onerous about having fair dinkum qualifications for a footy administration role.

I could've brought up Eyebrows as well. And for those of you gleefully flooding back to Aunty's morning radio, you've got Russell Woolf this week - celebrate your arses off.

I've said this before but I see those who refuse to be critical of anything the club does are the ones who insist this was the only choice. It wasn't.

The club had an opportunity here to bring in fresh ideas and experience and squibbed.Bell hasn't had much in the way of management experience in running a footy club and now he's the go to guy for every single facet of the off field management.

For those who insist that there were no real alternatives..well thats just more nonsense.

Alternatives exist at most clubs. Former senior coaches looking to take the next step up the ladder would certainly have provided valid alternatives, yet somehow we decided that a bloke with no experience in managing any facet of a footy club was the preferred option.

Freo is not a well run club. All the contrary nonsense promoted at every opportunity won't change that. We have been dismal on the field for the last few years and even our President expects that to continue next year. We have massive limitations in our coaching panel that is obvious to everyone except the club's management. We have backed our senior coach to the hilt in spite of an on-going poor performance and even when the opportunity arose earlier this year to revisit that appointment, the club 'doubled down' and insisted he was there for the long haul.

It seems that poor performance is not a hindrance to job security at Freo.

What does Bell bring to the role? Experience in list management? No. Experience in managing fitness? No. Experience in managing high performance (cough, cough) coaches? No.

Apparently, those endorsing him can only point to him being short and him being serious about his profile. I'm sure that will stand him in good stead when he has to evaluate the performance of the departments now reporting to him.

I'm seeing this as an opportunity missed.
