If it’s correct it is a fantastic deal for Fremantle.

Jesse is a 40+ goal a year player, when he’s getting sometimes average delivery into the Dees forward line. That’s ready to be used next year. Sure use one of the first rounders for the key forwards in this year’s draft, But LN will give us a first and second rounder. Given DL don’t want to wait another 5 years for some fruit to bear, from our high draft picks, this Hogan trade could solve long and short term problems. So the question is, if Hogan is not pick 5 worthy, then we wait 5 years.

I have a hard time believing the Dees will except our first pick only especially if they know we are getting more than that for Neale. If Hogan is coming it will cost more than just pick 5 or 6. I’d be waiting a year even if Neale goes and grabbing him as a free agent.

It also applies to LN, why wouldn’t Brissie wait another year, to get him on the cheap. In life if you wait, you’ll be left wondering.

I totally get that logic Biz, which is why I would try to squeeze Melbourne a bit. If the deal doesn’t happen, it’s by no means the end of the world - and could, as you say, work out better in the long run. I’d be much more interested in this deal if we are trading Neale, for example, because you don’t get many swings at young talent.

But as we’ve seen, elite key forwards who want to play for Freo don’t pop up very often. He’s 23, which fits our list profile. We’d still be adding teenagers, including something in the range of pick 6 (assuming we trade Neale). It’s a good move for now and the future.

A forward line spearheaded by Hogan and Tabs, with Walters, Ballas and (let’s say) Rakine looks to have a lot of goals in it. I think Hogan and Tabs would complement each other very well. I think Cox could add some great support, or settle into a Johnno role down back. He’s 19, so he has some time to develop and see where he fits best. I think it takes some pressure off him.

Our backline looks reasonably settled. Losing Neale hurts us in the middle, but I think Blakely could cover some of that, as well as another pre-season into Brayshaw, Cerra and Banfield. Mundy wouldn’t be needed forward and could add some ball-winning there in stretches.

Wouldn’t you be a bit excited to see that team play? Wouldn’t Lyon lose almost all his excuses about a team not being able to kick goals? What’s not to love? I get there’s some alternate future where everything lines up and Hogan ends up at Freo for nothing next season, but if we’ve got two first round picks, and one of them gets him, why take that chance?

Or, if the price isn’t right, wait and see what happens next year. I just don’t see how even the suggestion of Hogan coming to Freo makes people unhappy.

Bozza, what Melbourne would be weighing up is whether they can keep Hogan next year. If he leaves, I think they will likely get a compensation pick at the end of the draft (but someone correct me if I’m wrong). So, if you’re Melbourne, would you rather pick 6 this year, or pick 19 next year? It’s a no-brainer. If they could somehow sign Lynch as a FA, they probably get a slight upgrade over Hogan, and pick 6. That’s a move that can win you a premiership.

No the same doesn’t apply Jezza. We are likely to be languishing down the bottom of the ladder again next year and the Dees hanging around the top end. Our free agency compo for Neale won’t be too dissimilar to a “fair” trade this year. That is why Brissy must cough up and pay overs. There is no need to do that with Hogan.

Correct Morgan. A compo for Hogan will likely be after Melbourne's first pick (high teens). I would just rather 2 picks in the top 6 this year a less than average year next year then Hogan and another top 5 pick next year. That sets us up massively for the future in my opinion.

I don't doubt Hogan would be fantastic for us and produce more for the side than Neale but when one option is to wait a year and pick him up for free, I just can't see the logic in doing anything else. Especially when you're talking about giving up one of the elite kids at the top of a very good draft crop.

Offer them a second round pick and Sheridan now or they can have the compensation pick next year. I'd be fighting tooth and nail to keep any top 7 picks this year
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I think it’s important to leave Sheridan out of trade talk.

Maybe that is the smart play Biz. I guess it depends on how much you rate a draft prospect. I know you rate this draft highly. I just happen to rate Hogan very highly. I think we need someone with his skills and swagger in our forward line. More than that, as a fan I would love to see it.

I'm also mindful that rebuilding by the draft alone is a long process. Brisbane is a decade in, and is now recruiting players in their mid 20s to accelerate things. Teams can go into a death spiral, and it's hard to get out. Look at any top 10 in the draft and there are some transformative players, and some who never work out.

I think a top 6 pick and trading Brisbane's for Hogan is a good balance. We might only get 5-7 good years out of Hogan, but there's no guarantee an out-of-state draft pick wants to stick around, or any guarantee they will make it in the AFL.

Also, remember that if we wait next year West Coast could have a premiership and Kennedy turning 33 in the 2020 season. I'm sure they'd take a ping at Hogan at the end of 2019 if he didn't stay in Melbourne. .

He's never wanted to come here before. Melbourne were one (really) bad game from getting to a GF, and now he wants to come to Freo? And we could get him cheaper next year, when he has an option to go anywhere?

Please. Pass the Kool Aid.

Must be climate change - the Hogan hoohaw is a couple of months early this year. Regular as clockwork - gasping optimism that runs inevitably into an eventual nitpicking about his presumed faults when he finally comes out with his annual 'I ain't going nowhere' comment.
