TOPIC: The Rory Story

If I was coaching and I wanted to improve players accuracy shooting for goal, I'd put two goal posts 4 m apart. Let the players feel the disappointment of a near miss. If you are at training and kicking at normal sized goals, and you just squeeze one in, you'll probably think, "Yeah, good enough". But its not - if you just squeezed it in you probably had nearly a 50% chance of missing. So shrink the goals in training so that you only get the nice feeling of slotting one when you really did bang it through the middle.

On the other hand, or inside of the foot, the set shot snap facing 90 degrees away from the line to goal is a blight brought on by that stupid round ball international rules thingo.

Smart and skilful players like eddy betts can do it with any shape ball but they’re just freaks. Not so smart or skillful players like Brandon Matera just look less smart and less skillful when they try it and stuff it up.

The sadder bit. Have you seen how many kids try it in the half time little league games?

We’re doomed.

By the way, I don’t think Rory Lobb is worth chasing hard.

Nah, RR practise as you play, with full size goals and points. The players soon get told by their mates on the mark or in the square that they were lucky to get anything over 8 inches off being over the goal umpires hat.

Seems to be a lot of talk about Lobb coming to freo in the last day or two.. What do you think he would cost? swapping our first round picks is probably the most obvious.. Our pick 5 becomes pick 12 and we get Lobb.. Do you think that would satisfy them or would they want a bit more?

12 aligns thereabouts for an Ian Hill so it could work.
Depends abit on a Lachie departure too and if we get another 1 st rounder I reckon.

For what its worth, Lobb's repeat injuries are what concerns me most.

If the rumour is correct, GWS want salary cap relief more than draft picks. They want the money to retain Dylan Shiel (and others).

Lobb has a year left to run at GWS and he is OK to go to WA, and will go to the team who will pay the most moolah.
The Dockers will likely have more cash to pay than the Eagles.
What they get in return might be next year's Round 2 pick plus Apeness or Strandica or Darcy or Jones (or even Sandi if they offered him a 2 year deal.).
Eagles could get Lobb, but only if they gave him a multi-year deal where the back-end was more heavily loaded than the first 2 years (and furnished them with 2 x round 2 picks). Lobb won't go to the Eagles for less money.

So, step in ("salao") Chris Bond, our very own old man and the sea. And as the remaining light seeps from his soul and the hour approaches midnight, can he summon the courage, strength and inspiration to catch the big fish that has eluded him for 12 years?
Welcome to the Eagles, Rory Lobb.

He is not worth what we are going to offer in both a trade and salary cap space. Hodor is a far better ruckman and 6 years younger while Lobb is not a KPF and no better than what we already have where as the draft picks we waste could be better. GWS will want at least one of our first round picks.

I'd pass but I know the blokes running the club are desperate for a coup or good news story to deflect criticism. Lobb will do that but hurt our rebuild.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

You can be negative all you like Bizkit, me I'm looking forward to Lobb and Conca joining Matera and Kersten, in what's looking like a very exciting forward/midfield set up.

That's what good looks like to me.

But then again they've done a good job of late managing my expectation.

I wouldn’t downgrade our first pick to get Rory Lobb. It’s overs. There has been some talk that Lobb wants to play as a forward and not a first choice ruck. He would find it hard to get a gig in the Slimes forward line so if we want him a future 2nd round pick may get it done. Lobb in the forward line pinch hitting in the ruck for Darcy doesn’t look too bad at all.

Something tells me that Rory Lobb is a Zac Clarke Mk 2. I expected him to do more for GWS when the big fella Mumford wasn't calling all the shots. And call be Mr. Optimism, but our ruck stocks and forward stocks for that matter really aren't to shabby. They're young and developing with plenty of upside. This trade and draft period will be the icing to our rebuild. Also didn't we offer Lobb a contract before he decided to resign with GWS. If so, Lobb's boat has sailed.

Come on Hypen, do really mean Kersten the forward who is now a born again backman? And Matera the small goalsneak that became a very average midfielder.
Also I think you failed to take into account the underwhelming season of that other recruit in McCarthy.

Fair point Hypen, they will be a fantastic combination for Peel.

I should also point out he'll be 26 next season, the same age as Dutchy when we delisted him for the rebuild. That leaves Lobb with maybe 3/4 decent years (I'd wager less considering the severe back injuries he's been struggling through the past few seasons) before he's of no use to our rebuild.

He won't be here for our next tilt at a premiership, save the draft picks and salary cap space for someone who will.

Lobb can take - 8 out of 10 times - a contested mark inside the forward 50 instead of just knocking it to ground. He's quick, a very straight kick and a massive unit from the waist up. He's been wasted as a ruck at Penrith - plunk him as a high forward and he will be your get out of jail card for yonks. Bang him up in the ruck and he'll suffer a lot of injuries. If you need a power forward he's your man, this is what everyone has been whining about since before Pav retired. Grab your belts and have a think on this, geez.
