Cletus if I took you down the park 35mtrs directly in front, you would probably nail 8/10...
Now If I asked you to the same thing but first do 10 consecutive 100s with tackle bags in the middle whilst getting tackled yourself after each effort I reckon you would be down to 1/10..
Even the Full Forwards are clocking up 15kms in a game now.
I wonder what Dunstall clocked in his game time - 4km at absolute best..

Tony Lockett and Ablett Snr, just to name a couple didn’t miss too many inside forward 50, more importantly in the goal square. That’s because they never left the vicinity. Now then just to reinforce Demo’s point, doing consecutive 50m sprints at elite level isn’t your casual trot up and down the oval. And after those sprints you’ve got 30 secs to get your *hi* together to put it between the sticks. Perspective Cletus, sometimes stats don’t reflect reality.

Most set shots are taken from tougher angles and distances these days as the F50 tends to be very congested. I would think kicking is better these days than in the past but players are forced to execute under tougher circumstances.

Yeah, baseball is very much a hit and miss game - a full forward in footy is there to actually kick the goal.

I don't buy the excuse that goals are harder to kick in the present game, they aren't. Over the past couple of weeks the Front Bar has had a few old forwards on with clips of their goals - very little luck in slotting them, a lot of pure applied skill. The clips of Dunstall and Bretton were wonderful to see - straight up dropkicks from anywhere in front of goals. Now the game is full of tossers that can't hit it from 20 metres out straight in front. You never know what you're going to get - it makes Matty Richardson look like a god.

It's so stupid - the whole point of the game is to put the ball through there.

"The Modern GameTM" seems to be preoccupied with fitness and keepies off, to the exclusion of all else.

I'm getting bored with saying and hearing this, but if every team also had on the field at least one (1) big lummox who could clunk marks and kick straight; and at least one (1) cheeky little turd who could enrage defenders and be "mercurial" and also kick straight; and if nothing more were required of these players, it would be a much more fun game to watch.

An endless midfield whirlpool that occasionally farts out a goal by accident is not fun to watch.

Dunstall was a quality forward because he could kick straight. The guys who couldn't did other things and weren't quality forwards. In Dunstall's day - about 30 kg ago I'd guess - forwards legs weren't buggered when they were kicking because they didn't, or couldn't, run up and down the paddock all day to get numbers around the ball and create turnovers and get the ball into their teams hands. Coaches have also worked out that if your own team is kicking the ball to each other in whirlpool configuration, or for that matter any other configuration, then the opposition team isn't scoring.

This idea that teams should do whatever they can to win irrespective of its effect on the visual appeal of the game sucks.

I have a theory on this. Have you noticed how commentators voices go up 3 or 4 octaves, and speed up by about 500% when some one kicks a banana goal? Players that banana kick today don't have jobs, so they have time to watch the replays on demand, and get to hear Brereton or Taylor or (god help us) Bwuce going bananas over their banana kick for hours on end, it feeds their ego.
