TOPIC: Peter Bell

This leak/non-announcement suggests that the Freo Admin were worried about the way the appointment of Bell would be received, so they floated it out to gauge reaction before making the decision.

I think there are two options for this appointment:

My preference would be to get someone from outside the club with the internal/external authority to hold Lyon - and effectively the Board who appointed him - to account on footballing decisions, including Lyon's contract. I have no idea who that person would be, but my guess is they wouldn't be easy to land, at least not quickly.

Alternatively, you get someone with enough cache within the football club and the WA media to take the role and stand up to Lyon if need be.

I think Bell is a reasonable choice if you went the second path, but it all still seems a bit insular to me.

Jezza, agree that the signing of Cerra is fortuitous. Disagree though, about LN. He has been a pint-sized pillar of the club and our best player over the last 2 years. If a player of his loyalty and application is seeing fit to explore other options then you need to curb your knee-jerk outrage and ask yourself whether there is really something else, like being in Fyfe's shadow for example, or simply he and his partner are looking for a change, or just ensuring a decent rise from Freo to match his true value. They are young and maybe footloose. If I was his Dad, given what we see of the bland commercial modus operandi of Freo towards its fanbase, I would tell him without hesitation to sound out whatever opportunities present, in considering his future. What happens with Cerra and Lachie, is certainly a bellwether for the health of the club's rebuild, much more so than Weller last year. If they do leave, we must get an acceptable trade in return.

Ref different news sources, all 7-West media outlets share news content from the same editorial desk. All of them. That's Watoday, theWest, 6PR, ChEagle AND Ch9, Perthnow etc,. ... fed by Hagdorn, endorsed by Steve & Baz.
According to them, LN's request of a trade is pending, we'll see, and Bell is putting forward his credentials for the job.
Who knows.

I do feel that a P. Bell would bring passion for the club, strong direction and Mitchell-like footy nous that Lyon might respect and be able to work with; traits perhaps lacked by the rest of the administration from 2012 to now. The skills training by ass coaches might go up a gear to WC levels. Gee I feel dirty saying that, but the reality is they are top 4. External appointments seem to have fallen short. An internal appointment of an temperamental midget - think Clarkson - might just work..

We can't assume Bell will be a change maker or that Rosich wants, or can get one. Bell may a known and manageable quantity, not someone who will challenge Rosich and Lyon's approach.

He was part of the board that rubber stamped Lyon's extension.

It could be a case of - meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

I dunno about that Drubbing. Bell is his own man and can be forthright. He might well be driving the changes right now. Whether we like it or not we have Rosich and Lyon, but Bell may be the person that can challenge them and the ass coaches to improve their game plan, training drills and even fan engagement. From his experience at the ABC, he may also have benign influence on the way the women's footy is managed. I always thought Michelle Cowan's departure was a setback. Worth a punt but is Rosich brave enough. His own job should be on the line, if he isn't.

You might be right Drubbing, and that is certainly the risk. The Board and club seem to favour stability at the expense of fresh eyes, which has its problems.

I don't know Peter Bell, but he strikes me as someone who might not break ranks as part of a Board, but once his name is firmly attached as driving success on the field isn't going to take kindly to being a scapegoat. That should be interesting for Lyon.

The role of Footy Manager seems pretty technical these days. I don't doubt Bell knows the game well and football operations at a high-level, but I'm not sure he has the experience to step into the role. This could be supplemented by an experience and technically-astute 2IC, but I have my doubts.

Morgan, all your scenarios make we wonder why you wouldn't just sack the coach.

The (rare) short answer is that it would cost too much and I'm not sure from the outside how good a job he's doing. The new Football Manager is going to have a big say about what happens to Lyon next season. If we make the finals or finish last then the question answers itself in many respects, but likely we'll finish somewhere in between, which means someone is going to need to make that call.

Peter Bell strikes me as someone unafraid of a big decision. I think we might be able to get a better Football Manager elsewhere, but if Lyon really is a huge part of the problem, is a (relatively) unknown Football Manager from another club going to have the gravitas to make that call 9 months into their tenure?

So we might get a qualified football manager elsewhere but Peter Bell seems like the sort of person who could fire Ross Lyon.

If that's the only qualification required, there's more than a couple of prospective candidates around here.

The Footy Manager is a Senior Leadership position. I haven’t see the RACI, but these days they seem to oversee all aspects of footy operations, rather than be running the day-to-day operations of those departments. The list managers seem to manage the list, the talent spotters spot the talent, the fitness staff mange the fitness…you know, cobblers etc. Footy Manager/GM Footy Operations is the conduit between the Board and the club.

There are some pretty big calls coming, including on the coach and fitness staff. We could elevate someone from a more junior role at another club, but is, for example, Marcus Wagner - Performance and Strategy Manager at Collingwood, after being appointed in November, going to stand in front of the Board in June and say “we need to sack the coach, I don’t care if it costs the club millions to do it”?

I think that would be very difficult. I think Bell could say ‘hey, I co-signed the extension, but it hasn’t worked out. Trust me, we need to sack the coach.’ I think that would be more persuasive.

I think the trade-off is you lose the fresh set of eyes. But you can still get that by getting someone like [insert name] - Performance and Strategy Manager at [insert club] in the 2IC role.

Or you can approach the most talented, highly regarded existing GM in the league and wait patiently while they thank you for their interest, but would rather remain with a Melbourne-based club, and try to ignore their muffled laughter as you leave the room.

Peter Bell is Freo through and through, but he isn't the new broom that's going to be needed. The club needs new ideas and new initiatives.

Other clubs reviews will be about how do we do things better?

Freo's will (or should be) about how do we get out of this mess we've created, before things get worse?

I reckon the pursuit of new initiatives was what resulted in Adelaide trying some new fang dangled preseason camp thing ... not to mention Essendon's breaking bad strategy.

Chasing the latest and greatest shiny thing can result in unforeseen consequences.

Gotta be careful despite the pressure to be seen to 'do something'.

Adelaide got spooked playing in a Grand Final for the first time in ages against Richmond, who were also playing in the Grand Final for the first time in ages, but were playing on their home ground in front of 80,000 people. Rather than accept that is a thing that can happen (especially in a league where some teams benefit from in-built advantages) Adelaide decided there was something wrong with the psyche of the playing group and entrusted the psychological rebuilding of their players to consultants who definitely weren't psychologists.

And to think, I would easily have preferred Pyke and Burton to Lyon and Bond had you asked me last year.

Sometimes stability has its advantages.
