TOPIC: So what's a Pass Mark for 2019?

A pass is given to a team's best effort in defeat and wins.
Thats true for grassroots, WAFL games.
But it seems that it does not ring true for a AFL team.
Keeping up appearances seems to be more important.

Pass mark: catching Jezza on a drum line to track him to his source of eternal optimism.

I dunno what bait they are using to drag jezza in but its obviously got strong psychedelic properties.

Might be worth looking at Jezza's prognostication for this year before embarking on his claims for next year.

No way Slime gets anywhere near the 8.

Top 4: Melb, Rich, Adl, Cats
Next 4: GWS, Freo, Port, Syd
Next lot: Dogs, Saints, Essendon, Hawks
Bottom 6: Blues, Norths, Brisbane, Slime, Pies and Suns.

The only thing that’s stopping me from putting Freo in the top 4 is the availability of Sandi.

But finals next year, right?

I posted gloomy thoughts on this thread early this morning. Since then, I've drunk enough coffee for my mood to lighten enough to adjust my idea what could - realistically - be regarded as an improvement on this season: 10 wins, this season's 8 wins and 2 more, over the other mob up the road. That would be success enough for me. And scoring more goals, please.

Last time I won a footy tipping competition was in 1983, coincidentally the last time I backed the winner of the Melbourne Cup, Kiwi. So my track record isn’t ideal. Who would’ve thought Trump being elected President and Richmond winning a premiership. Throw the form guide out that’s my motto.

I hope I am wrong but I see us finishing bottom 4. I actually think we will get a bit worse before we get better. A couple of retirements. Mundy had an awesome season this year without getting injured he will be a year older and not quite as good. Our draft picks from last year might come on a little bit but not as much as year 3 and 4. I see us being a good 3-4 years away from challenging. I don't mean to be overly pessamistic but I think its the cold hard reality of where we are at.

At least you're honest Jezza, but it's not looking good for next year again judging on your stated history.

The good thing about football and progress is it's not linear.

Ok Jezza, so - by your own admission, you suck at footy tipping and can't get seem to pick a winner in much else. So why do you think you're qualified to berate all and sundry for seeing what they see, is the bleedin obvious?

Optimism on its own, constantly repeated, doesn't create facts. It needs an anchor is something real and measurable, otherwise all you need to believe in the flying spaghetti monster is a love of Pastafarianism.

You don't back the coach just because you think that's what supporters do. When supporters feel cheated, lied to disregarded and patronised, and the person doing it sucks at performing their job, they're not far wrong in giving the bloke crap.

That said, my prediction for 2019 is more of the same. Same calves, same TBA injuries. Bennell doesn't play, Lyon struggles for 8 wins on the back of a game that is devoid of creative, organised, skilled play because they couldn't be arsed to focus on footy skills in training and preseason. Again.

Long story short I have faith in the club and to Roly to have success in the coming years. If the club had not committed to this rebuild and to stay the journey the pain would’ve been greater. Pretty much when Freo brought in Josh Carr, Des Hedland, Tarrant, Anthony, Solomon, Johnson, Kepler Bradley etc. Throwing away our draft picks for short term gain. We’re paying for it now. Tell me how that’s better. Since Roly, we’ve turned Barlow, Crowle, role players into GF players. Now albeit a couple of years of pain, we’re seeing young talent hopefully become 10 year players for our club and our first lot of premiership players.

Players that should get better or more consistent include:

Cox
Taberner
Darcy
Cerra
Brayshaw
Ryan
Banfield
Langdon
Logue
Duman
Grey
Giro
Crowden
Pearce
McCarthy
Apeness?
Sheridan?

Players maintaining peak form:
Fyfe
Walters
Hill brothers
Neale
Wilson
Mundy
Blakeley

It’s really hard to see a reason why we shouldn’t be quite a lot better if we a) stay reasonably fit and b) good coaching to get the best out of the squad

Yes a couple of players are past their peak but when you see the scope for improvement of the above I don’t believe anything less than 12 wins is acceptable. Certainly any more than a couple of 50 point losses let alone 100 points is highly unacceptable.

We’ve shown a fair bit of promise in patches and had a few good wins this year I would say against Adelaide, Essendon and Bulldogs but they are about the only ‘good wins’ we’ve had and they’ve been at home. We need a few scalps away from home and less shellackings like at the hands of Brisbane which to me hurt just as much as the Geelong loss.

So 12 wins is a pass and at least competitive in all games.

Hope and faith isn't enough. That's the security blanket for those who don't want to question what they're told, or think for themselves, or apply logic and reasoning to situations based on evidence and history.

You think all it needs is time and games in kids. Have you actually looked at the way Freo play? The decisions, and lack of, that have left us in a massive player turnover situation. These are not new facts, it's just that you refuse to acknowledge them.

It's not kids errors that are holding them back. It's the lack of structure, strategy, the coaching mindset that won't admit the game needs more than fit runners giving 'effort', the lip service paid to skills training, and the willingness to keep doing all of it over again, even though it's been failing since 2015.
