TOPIC: He makes some good points

Skills are a reflection of the game on the day. It’s funny, we were scoring quite freely in the early rounds and winning. Geelong are a team that should be winning premierships with their skill and personnel and yet are on the brink of the 8. Please, when teams get belted and we’ve had a few, the white noise is unbearable. If you think our problems was skills well it was quite evident pre Lyon that we were just as bad. It’s just one of many things that goes in the mix before a result like Saturday eventuated.

Jezza is there actually anything that Roly could or could not do that you would actually ever be critical of?

We are once again a laughing stock of the AFL and for some reason after that effort you and Jason seem to think it's unfair and unrealistic for the coach to be criticised.

One of the things I like about Jezza is his optimism in the face of a wave of negativity. Another is his approach in not personalizing his responses.

I agree with Jezza. It's one thing to lose by a lot in a rebuilding period but to lose by that much to a team on the brink of the 8 is disgraceful. As Jezza says, it's not just one thing that's wrong. It's many things, the loss on the weekend was inevitable and it won't be fixed quickly.

End of the game on Saturday and David Hale is left of Roly in the box. Roly knows how to coach, he’s proven that over many years. Would any of our assistants be picked up by another club?

Jezza: "If you think our problems was skills well it was quite evident pre Lyon that we were just as bad."

So skills have always been a problem and Lyon has never fixed it?

CA, it’s not just about Roly. Chris Connolly had to endure similar criticism before he was sent packing. Geelong, I’m pretty sure walloped Melb, about 5 years ago, with a similar margin, and the Dess were a subject of ridiculed. In a 2 team town, this scenario doesn’t bode well for the team that’s getting belted. Even in Duffield’s article, the slime won the spoon in 2010. They then got players like Darling et al. We’re banged up, playing the kids, because that’s what we want, and we got a shellacking. Am I concerned, absolutely. Will the club turn things around, my oath. But if all the noises was about Roly, then he hasn’t had much peace since joining the club. If it’s changes we want, let’s not single him out.

No Noddy. I've said that before. They are a bunch of no names with little to no coaching experience at other AFL clubs.

As a matter of interest, have any of Roly's ass coaches from any time gone on to be a full time coach at AFL level? I think there are about seven? that have worked with Clarkson.

Jezza, you've been asked this question many times (three times by me I think), but you always either shirk it or ignore it completely:

What could possibly happen, short of his untimely death, that would move you to contemplate replacing our coach?

Yes I take your point Jezza, but that's the coaching game. Rightly or wrongly the buck stops with him. All coaches know that when they take on the job.

I’m not totally against replacing Lyon but let’s wait till 2020. To many clubs jump at their own shadow. It’s fine for Cameron Ling to use Hawthorn as his comparison when sticking the boot in. But he failed to address that unless you’re from WA, no one wants to make the move West unless you draft them. I’ll say it again, give me a name to take over Lyon and wave his magic wand. There’s nothing jumping out of the page. But I can guarantee that there’ll be a few clubs that will want Lyon at their club in a heartbeat.

The worst type of football analyst is the ‘I’m confused’ guy. It’s the guy who, when confronted with something he doesn’t understand, instead of following his intellectual curiosity or professional responsibility as an analyst to try and understand the issue, instead lazy declines to invest the effort, and instead says “I’m confused” as if it is a fully formed point that would assist the viewer. Matthew Richardson is the captain of this loathsome club, and Cane Cornes is his less-likeable successor.

I don’t watch the Sunday Footy Show because I value my time, so I can only go on what was reported. So let’s tackle this line-by-line.

Question: “So Ross, are you rebuilding or are you not?”
Answer: Yes.

Off to a bright start.

“Danyle Pearce has been best on ground nine games in a row (in the WAFL) and you won’t play him, yet during the week you sign Hayden Ballantyne who had one possession at half-time and four for the game, didn’t touch the footy in the second or fourth quarter. He’s 31 years of age.

Notwithstanding that Ballantyne is a year younger than Pearce, they play different positions. Freo has a few players who can play that outside-linking midfield role, and there are three elite-level players ahead of Pearce at the moment (the Hills and Langdon). We are a little light on for small forwards, meaning a one-year deal for Ballantyne makes some sense. Add the fact Ballas was a guy who was undrafted initially and willed himself into the AFL with his work ethic, and played like every game was his last, was in the leadership group for a while and has taken on a mentoring role, I can see why you’d like to have him at the club on a one-year deal.

“You’re also thinking about re-signing Aaron Sandilands who’s about to be 36, he has hardly played in the last two years.”

Sandi has been arguably the most dominant ruckman in the league over the last decade, and we have a bunch of young ruckmen who could learn a lot from him. Sandi will probably sign on for a relatively modest fee, so the only detriment here is if games are taken away from talented younger ruckmen – who would struggle to put a full season together in any event.

“And Harley Bennell, he’s played two (AFL) games in his time at Fremantle and you go and sign him.”

Freo are struggling for elite talent and, in particular, skilled players. There’s probably only a small chance that Harley will resurrect his career, but the chance is probably greater than some guy we take at pick 80-100 in the draft.

Cornes seems to be labouring under the misapprehension that unless your entire list is 19 years old you are not rebuilding. Hutchy used to be guilty of this during his Footy Classified run. Sometimes there is merit in keeping some old heads on one-year deals. The trade-off is for one or two slots at the back of the rookie draft. We’ve had 8 debutants this year. We’ve got one of the youngest teams running around. Of course we’re rebuilding.

Maybe we’re not doing the rebuild well, but if that’s the view at least go to the effort of challenging the drafting, or the list management, or the coaching, or the effort. Taking two pieces of news – a whipping and Ballas re-signing for year – and putting them together to form an ‘I’m confused’ statement is the laziest form of analysis.

I can't see a decent point in there. That people are so disillusioned with the club that they think Cornes is making a point is a bit sad.

So Jezza - even if what happened this week happened every week for the next two years, you'd still be in favour of seeing out the contract?

Connoly didn't provided the expectation of success, nor did he come with Lyon's pay packet or long contract.

I get tired of the pro roly taking about the kids, their skills, being cooked etc. The whole team's skills are atrocious and well below AFL level. Individually, experienced players have good skills, but collectively, they fall apart very easily.

That is a coaching problem, I've said if before, because this seems pretty clear to me, and anyone else not enamoured of Lyon's past, and now distant successes.

If Lyon was such a great coach, he'd learn by his failures. He doesn't, he gives lip service to that with his tiresome cliches of 'feedback', and carries on failing and using rebuild as an excuse. This team will still suck when the kids have 50 games.
