Sorry, but nope. Sacking the coach will shave two years off the time when he's gone.

What are you complaining about... There was free flowing game play... one side kicked over 20 goals... It was a success for Gillon McLachlan...

When Harvey left, I thought we were a rabble and that our subsequent improvement was at least in part down to Roly. But others said that Harvey was robbed, and that he would have done just as well with the players we had.
It seems Roly is hanging around for now, so we won't know how the current bunch would go under a different coach.

So we’ll survive this but the club has to stick by Roly until 2020. Sacking the coach is the easy way out.

Why did I guess you would arrive at this conclusion, Jezza? I expect you'll still be saying this at the end of next season.

We have turned over more than half our playing roster in 3 off seasons. we will lose more players this off season. With upcoming retirements, we will turn over more player in the next years. Suddenly expecting us to be contenders in 2020 against the evidence is staggering. Its a pipe dream.

Some of our deficiencies are obvious - we lack good foot skills, on field organisation, structures that support our ability to score. These can be addressed but what is hard to understand is, why aren't they being addressed?

Its fine that Roly is glib and gets on well with the players but that isn't enough. Yesterday's press conference showed a man lacking the answers. He was unable to answer most of the questions and resorted to offering excuses and then belittling the questioner. Not once was he able to directly respond to the issues being raised. That is obviously sufficient for some but it isn't for myself and others.

Not being ready to swallow any pap put out by Dooker Central might be dismissed as relentless negativity by those with nothing else to offer but refusing to recognise facts is probably a bigger burden to carry.

Repeating failed processes isn't going to suddenly become a winning strategy. There is a difference between being steadfast and being mindlessly stubborn and it isn't up to the fans to be able to determine the difference. The leadership is supposed to come from within the club hierarchy but what we get is silence.

What is our path forward? What are we doing to address the obvious problems? I'm pretty sure there is nobody inside or outside the club with those answers. We should look at the way successful club go about doing things and shamelessly steal the best ideas but we seem to be ignoring all of that and insisting that if we stick at what hasn't worked long enough, it will all suddenly result in glory.

....and when it doesn't?

Eff it, I will say more.
I think you confuse supposed changes in game plan (which sort of contradicts those who claim Roly has no Plan B) to changes in execution efficiency, fitness and confidence.

I would lose confidence after half time, if every time I won the footy and went to kick it downfield, I saw, not as I had seen in the first half 3 or 4 forwards leading to my kick, but 3 or 4 forwards about 20 meters away leading away from me with no real hope of me executing a perfect pass, and no real hope of winning any more than 20% of the contests. That is what we see, and it does not work. Against the likes of Carlton and co we end up just beating them, and don't get a percentage boost, against the good sides we win about 15 to 20 % of games, narrowly, with another lack of percentage boost, and lose 10% narrowly, Ditto % and lose the rest by big margins, destroying both confidence and percentage.

As for fitness, the continuous end to end sprinting is not sustainable. Other coaches have seen this and changed the way they play. We are still stuck in the early 2010's and suffering.

The mob down the road, while will be in finals for the fourth consecutive year, struggled after for 2 years when Woosha was sacked. After Harves sacking , we were in finals for 4 consecutive years. Melb will be playing finals after 12 years in the wilderness, and 4 sacked coaches. They rebuild under Roos. The angst is growing but I understand Yeti, that we’re incredibly inexperienced and young. Sacking Roly won’t fast tracked the rebuild, not unless you’re prepared to hire Roosey. I can’t think of anyone else who’ll come in and wave their wand.

Jezza, why choose Roos? He offers not much more than where we are now.

Read what I said before. We should steal ideas from the successful clubs. Look at Clarkson, easily the most successful coach in the game today. He builds his teams on very good skills, very good organisation on field and is no less loved by his players. You won't see 23 consecutive and unanswered goals scored against a Clarkson coached team.

I would have said that about Roly once but the fact is, even with a very good back 6 we've been easy to score against by the better skilled teams. Our mids are often badly beaten and our defence is expected to pick up the slack. That is doesn't work is obvious.

No, a new coach will take some years to make the needed changes and improvements but just because it will take time is no excuse to keep putting it off.

Sorry Jezza but by comparing us to all the other no hoper clubs who have failed over the years you are putting us in the basket case category with them.
How about us striving to be like the top clubs who continue to make the finals (and yes the slime are one of them) and not get some sort of sad pleasure out of being not quite as bad as some other losers.

Clarkson is so far above everyone else, he is a freak.
Surely it wouldnt be that hard to watch the Hawks vision and "steal" some of their method. Sure our bodies are under developed, we`re now fatigued and injured and we cant execute like the Hawks. Still we could learn a lot from watching the behind the goal vision of how they set up.

I thought the turning point was getting Hale and Guerra but clearly I was wrong on that.

Roly keeps saying failure is feedback. Well so is success. He could simply watch some of our own better games if he doenst want to watch the Hawks. Its confusing to see us structure up well one week and get a good result and then revert the next week or even within games.
Clearly nothing is simple and the problem is multifactorial but it would help if Roly listed what he thought were our problems and how he was aiming to address them over time. Instead Im left trying to interpret all his Rolyisms and you come away from each of his pressers wondering if he actually was at the game.

Mick Malthouse was a good coach once , then he took Carlton to the wooden spoon then retired cos he had no ideas left . the game had passed him by , well the same has happened to Ross . It is time .

Clarkson is a freak but we don't need to be Clarkson to steal his ideas. His ass coaches over the years are making a good fist of things.

Why not copy what has been successful. It seems to work for our opposition.

Here’s the thing, I thought GWS would’ve won a premiership by now given the handouts afforded to them by the AFL. Then there’s the Suns, 3 coaches later and they’ve still got no idea. Can Freo afford a rookie coach. I think not. So who’s available out there that would do a better job. Let Roly do a Damien Hardwick. Bring in some quality help to allow Roly to do a Hardwick.

Roly hasn't actually enjoyed having quality help and good coaches around him previously so don't see how or why that would change unless it was forced upon him.
