TOPIC: The Apocalypse at the Cattery

This was just posted on a news site:

Fremantle's losses by 50+ points under Roly
2012: 1
2013: 1
2014: 2
2015: 2
2016: 4
2017: 6
2018: 9

....and apparently our rebuild is tracking nicely. I'd hate to see what a bad rebuild looks like then.

I'm assuming sustained success is code for "We are now Carlton"

Their players are better than ours.

We had a long trip so you lose 5-10% of your potency plus another 5-10% for away game disadvantage.

The performance of the coach is less knowable to those outside the tent like most dockerelanders. Who knows, maybe Ross prevented a larger shellacking?!

Pull out all the stats you like to support whatever your argument is but that game today was simply indefensible.
Unless the players can see something we can’t they will be jumping from the ship and who can blame them.
Cerra is gone in my opinion and that’s an indictment on the club. The only players we seem to be able to attract are those that want to come home and the football is simply.not an enjoyment to watch. It can’t be fun to play and I reckon it will be a quiet trip home.
Big job to get the squad up and going next year and I’m sure in my mind the current administration and coaching group are not up to it.

Yeah prince, we are turning over our list without rhyme or reason other than to cover up blokes who have no idea.

This is our 'sustained success' right here.

Also, you can add in another statement from Roly that there would be no excuse why he hasn't delivered our first flag by 2020. I'm not seeing 3 years in the bottom six suddenly turning us into flag material. Are you?

Just back from the game.
Seriously difficult conditions. Looked like it was the first time many of our players had been to Geelong. Also looked like the first time they had played in hail.

I have 3 comments on the way we play:

I know Fyfe racks up the disposals in the midfield, but I think he needs to move full-time to CHF. With Johnson retiring, let's move Cox to CHB and use him as a swingman when we need another tall.

Darcy should be free to tap it wherever he pleases. This rubbish of tapping it straight down at his feet fools the opposition once only.

Finally, we need 3 different running set plays from kick-ins; just like a set play at stoppages.

I liked Hypens simple summary, "the players are broken". I agree with that. I dont think they havent bought in, they have, I dont think they arent putting in 110% effort, they are.

Its just that they are broken. The game plan and system is broken and they dont know what to do and now they are broken. When that happens even good players second guess themselves, stop playing on, stop attacking, stop enjoying it and go into their shells. Their first instinct they question and then ultimately their disposal efficiency falls. Once that happens its a viscious circle.

When they play an inferior team like Carlton, they play on instinct and can manage to look OK. But under pressure, severe pressure there is no rock to lean on. No solid, back to basics that we all turn to when life gets tough. When Geelong kicked 4 in a row, every Docker player should have known how to go back to basics. But they didnt. Instead of manning up and forcing one on one individual contests all round the ground they became an increasingly incoherent rabble.

If you want to know how to play football (Roly) watch the recent Cats vs Hawks match. Watch how the Hawks played that second quarter. Good old fashioned back to basics football. Watch then the Cats come back in the last, again fantastic basic attacking football.

Malthouse used to talk about the 100 1 percenters. Flapping your arms on the mark, going back quickly in a straight line when you took a mark, looking forward at all times, automatically cutting into the corridor once forward of half back as your first option, only switching if you can take ground, staying goal side of your opponent in defence, one up one down, one up one behind if its wet, dont all get sucked to the ball, kick in preference to handball, dont bomb it long, forwards lead into different areas at different times with a crumber in tow.......the list goes on. We do none of this.

We go into the match with a teenaged 202cm kid leading our ruck with no other ruck support. We then have the ridiculous vision of said kid floundering aroung the ground exhausted, helped out on occasion by our centre half forward who is now out of position and then replaced towards the end with our 34 yr old veteran who is heroically playing on his last legs. Seriously?

Our albeit underdone captain and one of the best 5 players in the game, for some reason cant be coached to run clear, look forward and deliver up field to advantage. For 3 years he just bangs it on to his boot. When it used to land on Pavs chest we all clapped and said how great it was but it was papering over the cracks. Fyfe could improve this aspect almost over night so why hasnt he? Its obvious to all of us but not to the coaches??

No matter who was the coach we probably would have lost this game because we dont have the cattle, our cattle cant kick and our youngsters are cooked.

Make no mistake though, our system is broken and unfortunately, at least today, so were our players.

browski,

we pretty much broke even on the clearances from the centre and from stoppages so the real problem isn't there.

Its everywhere else it would seem.

Our skills are deficient compared to to other sides and that is a coaching issue. Our organisation on the field is deficient and that is a game plan and coaching issue. We were often caught out of position and that is down to either the game plan or our players not knowing what they were supposed to be doing. We don't stick tackles very well and that is a coaching issue. Tackles are a skill thats needs to be practiced to be good at it.

All the effort in the world won't paper over the cracks or the deficiencies in the coaching box.

Yeah, I know the stats said we did OK at clearances.
However, here is the most important stat and it is a statistic that we need to remedy.

Marks inside 50.
Geelong 21
Freo 7

Watching a lot of games live; I get the feeling that a M50 stat is worth 6 possessions and is more important than 3 tackles
I back Fyfe to take more M50s then any of our current forwards - even when the delivery is rubbish.

Why don't we give it a trial run against the Pies next week.

Men-a-goal-a sums up what's wrong at Freo: never given the opportunity to play for us and yet the Cats turn him into what he is today, a consistently good performer who would walk in to our side today. How many others on our list are never reaching their full potential because of whatever is stunting and stifling them at the club?

KK's stats show we have the players to compete. They are capable. The problem is when we win the ball we DO NOT have options forward. The kick in strategy is a joke, as is the ruck strategy. That is not down to the players, that is the coaching box. Let Roger coach the last game. See what happens.
