TOPIC: This year's Draft

Agree about Meadows, and they should look at strijk from West Perth as well. Really, anyone kicking a decent amount of goals in there early to mid 20’s should be getting a close look at. Our record in this area is terrible.

I have to say I haven't been as impressed by Hill as others over the past couple of years and don't see him developing into a midfielder at AFL level. He would be very handy as a small forward or half forward and I think we could use that atm but I wouldn't be prepared to give up a first round pick for him personally (but many others would). I'd have him around the 20-30 mark in this draft but he'll probably go higher based on previous seasons form.

To me he seems like a smaller but more aggressive Brad Hill without the running power. His disposal can be elite but it can also let him down at times. He can get a bit lost in play but I can't tell yet if that's due to fitness or not, either way he doesn't tend to get a lot of the footy. When he does have it he can look dangerous though and I really like his intent to attack the opposition when they have the footy and try and turn it over. He seems like a perfect prototype for the modern pressure forward ala Richmond.

Hendrix would still be a very handy player at AFL level and has proven his knee is manageable. I'd give him another go but I can't see Freo picking him up again.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

So Subiaco have a better strength and conditioning department than us??
Not only have they got Zac Clarke up and running, Deluca is playing the best footy of his career and looks as fit and as strong as he ever has.
They get reserve and country players in and turn them into quality players.
Can we recruit the whole of the Subi fitness staff along with Schofield??

PS - Goodie Strijk is about 30 and ready to retire from the WAFL...too old.
Nelson and Black maybe worth a look aswell as Meadows though.
What Tim Kelly has shown is going to full time from part time can certainly turn WAFL ball magnets into quality AFL Players..

Caveat emptor. Tim Kelly aside, mature age WAFL players, like the VFL and SANFL, don’t often produce players of quality. History says that whilst missing the draft as a 18 year old can sometimes work to your advantage, they often don’t. As far as picking players up like Zac Clarke, it’s a huge risk. Menegola would certainly disagree, I guess.

When Zac Clarke was on our list everyone was pretty keen for him to get off it.

Only after his knees died which happened somewhere in 2013 from memory. Before that he was looking fantastic...

Not really knowing a lot about either but McAdam seems to have much the same attributes as Hill but is a proven player at a higher level and would be taken lower in the draft which would be more beneficial for us considering our late picks.

Biz, I don't care if Hill only gets 7 possesions a game, if he kicks 5 goals and sets a couple up. As for him going cold, maybe it is making a few other scouts cold.

As do I Raglan. I much prefer him forward and believe that's where he'll be most effective but he seems to be rated so highly based on his midfield potential and how he may be able to shape games in the future there. I just don't see it at the moment.

I do however see a hell of a lot of potential in him up forward as a Rioli type player who pressures and can turn games with just a few moments. In the middle I think he'll get lost and lack the impact he would otherwise have. As a result I'd rate him around the 20's picks.

if looking at mature WAFL players you shouldn`t go pass Blair Bell, plays and is built like a bull
is a great overhead mark for his size, and we are short of forwards
bond and roly have seen plenty of him at Peel but do either of them know a real footballer

Biz, if he is a goalkicker, and if we need goalkickers, as far as we are concerned he is a number 1 pick. If we don't need goalkickers, we may as well hope to get him in the 50's or 60's and go looking for what we need. Every club will have the top 40 rated in different positions according to need. Draft order is just a gimmick for the media to sell advertising. Like the media desire for video reviews, and forced delays in play.

There are a lot of things that determine where you would take a player in the draft order and personally, a small forward drops a little bit lower than other positions like top notch KPP and ruckman. I'd also have him below star mids so he drops to the 20's for mine.

We still have Sonny for a while but our need for another quality small is pretty high. You still don't want to go reaching too far and our first pick would definitely be a reach for Hill. If we trade down the order, I'm happy to take him in the late teens to twenties.

Walters and B Hill are the players we need around the middle of the ground getting the footy in to our goal kickers. Walters kicks bags of goals playing as a centreman, he is tagged and scragged too heavily to get any freedom when playing as a permanent forward. And you get the added bonus of him hitting targets. But this argument is all academic at the present time.

What we need to recruit is blokes who are capable of, and able , to boot 'em from about 60m out, because unless sudden and great gamestyle change is forced upon our coach, talk of needing small forwards/tall forwards/marking forwards / goalkickers is completely hypothetical and a waste of time.

I mean, if perchance we recruited such things, what the hell are they gonna do???

So...for me...its got to be running midfielders who can boot 'em from a long way out ie can move like run like Brad Hill, but boot it like Willo...

Stephen Hill might be the model of what we want/need, but unfortuately, throughout his carreer, we rarely see him sinking the boot into the leather when on the run....

Certainly, id prefer us to change our gamestyle and recruit small forwards...
