Demo I would have thought Sheridan would be close to being delisted and have negligible value. Ditto Apeness. Tucker might move us up the order a spot or two but not really sure he is worth trading as I think he will improve. I am not really sold on either Cox or Darcy but I appreciate it is very early in their careers. I also disagree that the key forwards won’t go early, the good ones will be gone by pick 6, especially considering Weitering and Silvagni look like busts to me. I think Freo should also consider a direct swap of pick 6 (or whatever we get) for Tim Kelly. Doesn’t solve our forward woes though.

I am also a bit sick of the whole Hogan thing. Obviously without knowing him I don’t know his thinking, but I would have thought Fremantle’s chances of luring him home are close to zero.

As has been pointed out we have had great success with a number of our lower picks over the years compared to our higher picks.
Does anyone know or heard of guys that have been overlooked in recent drafts that are performing well at WAFL and other similar levels?
I feel we could pick up players from here that would be of more value than Sutcliffe and Sheridan. Plus we have three retirees to replace. Our draft numbers go into the 100s so we need to snare some players in their earl to mid 20s age group to bolster an area we have not drafted successfully.
I'm not saying we'd be lucky enough to pick up another Kelly but not really following the lower leagues that closely I can only think of a few WAFL players that might come under consideration.

Biz - we ‘traded’ Mayne for B.Hill. How on earth is that paying overs??

No way we trade pick 6 for Kelly. Wait a year and get him for naff all. Geelong can play hard ball al they like but the reality is if he went into the draft it would be with the tag - WA clubs need only apply. I would expect a second rounder or maybe a later pick with a skinny Victorian midfielder thrown in would get it done.

I’d be happy to trade out our pick 6 for two or three second rounders and get Ian Hill and O’Reily. Both (I believe) are Freo fans and the family connection is something we should really foster at the club, IMHO.

It certainly shapes as an interesting draft. Plenty of true KPP and X Factor players. I don't think the King boys will be available at Pick 6 but if Rankine is we'd be crazy not to grab him. Put him and Sonny side by side and watch in awe.
Bailey Williams might be worth looking at as well. Very much in the Ben Brown mould but has more agility.

Why does everyone keep talking about the King brothers as if you can get them both for one pick? My understanding is that they are separate and distinct entities.

Sandy, Mundy, Johnson, Spurr, Pearce, Ballantine dont have contracts for next year and a call will be made for those that haven’t already by the end of the year.
Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Nyhuis, Banfield, Grey, Hughes, Bennell, Strnadica, Giro and Daman don’t have contracts yet for next year (some were rookies) and may be trade bait. I’d like to see Banfield, Grey, Giro and Daman stay, maybe Strnadica re rookied, not sure if there’s any trade value in Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Nyhuis, Hughes maybe 3rd round or 4th round picks.
There isn’t really anyone else I want to lose on the list, maybe Apeness might have a little value 3rd or 4th round but from the above we may have 6 or 7 picks to fill, maybe we’ll upgrade rookies and only fill the minimum picks.

I would like to keep our pick 6 and have another shot at the best player available. Maybe for rookies we should be looking around for the best forwards in the 20 -24 age bracket in the 2nd tier leagues that have potential. I also think with ballas and matera not really working out we’re still in need of a small goal kicker. Anyone that can kick a goal should be looked at by freo...

You answered your own question there! At the time I wrote many times, no way we trade pick 23 for Hill, wait a year and get him for naff all. We let Mayne go for pick 23. We traded pick 23 for Hill when we could have waited a year and grabbed him cheap as his contract ended, retaining pick 23 (or using it to get higher in that draft). There was plenty of midfield talent left in that draft with the likes of Berry, Powell-Pepper, English, Witherden and Fisher all showing buckets of talent so far from around that pick.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Tim Kelly is already pretty elite. I see it like Richmond getting a Dion Prestia or Hawthorn getting Tom Mitchell for pick 6. Pretty much the same, you could get a better player with that pick in the draft, but there is a lot more risk as well.

Mitch McGovern may still be gettable. What about our first pick for McGovern and the Crows 2nd rounder. This also puts the Crows in a position to swap their 2 first round picks for a early pick to allow them to get Lukosius. From all reports they’re desperate to land him.

The idea that quality players get to other clubs for nothing doesn’t hold water. B Hill was never going to get to us at the end of his contract with the Hawks for nothing in the same way that we won’t get Tim Kelly for nothing if we let him run his contract down at Geelong next year.

With Tom Lynch leaving Gold Coast we might just get away with swapping Apeness for their compensation pick for Lynch.

Kelly for pick 6 has merit, but I wouldn't be adding anyone else. Get him now and we improve our midfield options overnight. Or could we trade pick 6 for an early 2nd rounder + later pick, then use that 2nd rounder for Kelly?

Gold Coast are going to take both the Kings - they need supporters (and need a gimmick not Vic midfielders) so forget trying to get hold of their compo pick. We've done the drafting for our 2020 premiership, we take Jason and get down to the business of sustained success. If we can get Ian Hill too, great - add Timmy Kelly, even better - but the last thing we need is middle of the range Peel prop ups to punt on.

Again, at the start if next year we've got 44 games to get us into contention - add three more to put the big one in the trophy cabinet. That's 47 games, there's no wiggle room to see what some kid may or may not be.

If the shoe was on the other foot and we were being offered Apeness would we be interested? I think not.
