Yeah Mike... Sadly I was there wearing the purple amongst that rabble.

There was no reply that I could see... my Twitter feed started going nuts after it happened and the video the AFL put up was barely adequate... but as far as I could see, no replay of any kind at the game.

Maybe so Grub, but if Lyon or any other Docker;s coach tried to suggest afterwards that it wasn't intentional then I would be calling for their head immediately. You don't make a terrible situation worse by trying to diminish the responsibility of the perpetrator unless your only genuine concern is for how your team will go without their star midfielder.

It's one thing for Gaff to be remorseful after the fact - it's another thing for the coach to start glossing over the action with the intent to reduce the penalty to the offending player.

And the booing by the Wet Toast 'corporates' that somehow had access to the Lyon presser afterwards just shows what a despicable bunch of prats their entire organisation is - from the head coach down.

We need a rebel comp to exclude these unsporting, drug cheating low lifes and remove them from existence.

I've had a good run Shane, so no hard feelings if this post gets canned!

One of the tv commentators said 'the Fremantle players have just seen the replay'.

Good on you DD!

So we have the "biggest super screens in the southern hemisphere" and a content editor who ensures that they are used only for advertising, and to show us the technique of a player having a set shot on goal (but never the dubious free kick that resulted in the set shot), and certainly not the defining incident of the 2018 season.

My limited understanding is that they do not show repeated replays of incidents that may incite crowd violence.
That was definitely one of those!

I just can't believe the audacity of this kid to headbutt pure ball player Andrew Gaff's clenched fist with his jaw. Completely uncalled for and I for one am outraged.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Couldn't agree more about the booing during Ross's press conference. I thought I heard it on the TV but thought, nah, they couldn't possibly be booing him ... could they? Disgraceful.

click

As Duffield says: "The well-lubricated West Coast corporates adjacent to the press conference room started booing Fremantle coach Ross Lyon when he began his press conference and started talking about the Gaff incident. Memo to Optus Stadium: This is a working environment. Either control the crowd or get them out."

That is incredible, docked. In a roundabout way I guess I was making the point that the crowd in general may not have had the benefit of having seen the replay, and so their deplorable reaction would not necessarily have been based on the facts. But the people sitting in corporate boxes have all manner of screens showing the broadcast feed, not the editorialised feed.

It's worth having another listen: the booing comes immediately after Ross's response to the first question of "how is Andrew Brayshaw." That is the informed response of Western Australia's "business elite." That is absolutely disgraceful.

Thankfully Titus didn't try and put a humorous spin on it. Told it like it was.

I know I'm a one eyed Freo fan and would hate to think we would have been the same, but i didn't realise my distaste for their supporters could be any greater than it already was. i actually feel I'm more disturbed by their reaction than the actual incident. Is that right? i don't know. I'm quite upset and confused by the whole situation.

West Coast (142) v Fremantle (84)

I have no idea what he was thinking.

Andrew Gaff’s punch, which left Andrew Brayshaw with terrible injuries, really took the gloss off what was a terrific weekend of football.

The punch, way off the ball and to the head was the sort of thing that society has been struggling to eradicate in recent times, with the knowledge that it can kill someone.

It makes the claims of it being ‘out of character’ ring hollow. How about not doing it in the first place?

What was just downright strange was the fact Gaff’s teammates all rallied around him in later in the game after a goal like he was Alex Johnson coming back from injury. The crowd also gave him a standing ovation when he went to the bench.

I remember when Tom Bugg punched Callum Mills for no reason and there was no standing ovation in the crowd that day, just disgust from his own supporters.

Tribalism is understandable but surely, we as footy fans can agree this was a terrible act, and the colours a player is wearing is irrelevant?

It led to the rest of what was a one-sided contest becoming repeated attempts at square ups, with Michael Johnson looking like facing some sanction for crunching Gaff later on.

Unfortunately, after a weekend when all our thoughts should be on how great the game is and how exciting the run to finals will be, our thoughts are with Andrew Brayshaw, who needed surgery to repair a broken jaw and three displaced lower teeth.

He won’t be able to eat solid food for a month.

Like all teams' supporters, I guess WCE has people who hold the view that they can do no wrong. We've got our share of them too.
But this is a beautiful test of the integrity of their 'moderates' — I think I'd want them to say that they were happy with a solid win, but in no way can they condone what Gaff did.
The response of those who seek to 'blame the victim' or to overstate the 'good character' of Gaff deserves your contempt and pity for their profound ignorance and boganity. Don't waste breath on them or even bother to spit in their direction. As my dear departed Mum used to say, "you can stoop and pick up nothing."

These days in football, you often see someone badly injured and the opponent calling for medical help. It shows how the game has moved on from the thuggery of the 80s. It was such a contrast to see someone seriously hurt and the opponent running away down the ground as if nothing had happened. After the next goal was scored Gaff was in the centre square discussing tactics for the next bounce. I don't think he was affected until the Freo players caught wind of what had happened. The interview with David King where Gaff was 'incredibly remorseful' as Adrian Barich horribly put it, was another act of cynicism from the Eagles. You'd think he would be the last person the Eagles would allow to be interviewed but they thought that putting him distressed and 'remorseful' in front of the cameras may reduce his suspension.

If the footy world had managed to forget that it was West Coast ferals who booed Adam Goodes, they've all now been sharply reminded at just how low the uncivilized Eagles crowd can go.

How many jaws does one need to break, I wonder, for it to be considered “in character”?

Most of us manage to deal with our anger and ‘brain snaps’ without punching someone in the face. It’s part of a social contract. Otherwise, you face criminal charges and jail time.

Additionally, this is our players’ workplace. It’s not safe. They go to work, yes, in a physically brutal contact sport being prepared that they might get concussed or break a leg or do an ACL. Fair enough, they know the risks. They shouldn’t have to go to work thinking they might get assaulted. No one should.

The Brayshaw family are a big enough AFL presence for the AFL to use this incident to treat this as a criminal act and set a precedent that physical assault isn’t allowed on the field. It’s not a testosterone explosion on the field, just as it’s not a testosterone explosion when an 18 year old dies after being king hit outside a pub. It’s violent assault.
