True, Jezza, paper analysis suggests there have been worse times.

But expectations are much higher now than before, because RL brought success to the club. He's a methods-driven coach who took on a quality, developing squad (RL's own words at the time were something like: "who wouldn't want to work with this squad/these players") and gave them a winning system. Unfortunately, he now seems to be demonstrating an inability to rebuild and develop the playing group in a manner that is likely to bring more success, anytime soon.

I'm not one of your "Roly bashers", but I do think that the Dockers have reached the stage where another proven coach could come into the club and repeat the success that RL achieved with Harvey's rebuilt squad.

Roly is rebuilding but some can’t remember from week to week that we have a squad that is very inexperienced. There’s no point turfing Roly out now, it’d be nuts.

If we’d been fortunate to have either Tabs or Apeness or both fit all season, things may have been different. Losing Blakely and Fyfe hasn’t helped either.

I don't think it's that expectations are higher now. If anything, a large group of people have lower expectations because they've convinced themselves that we were once worse than this. This is par terrible.

I’m more inclined to bring in a couple of assistants that will make Roly a better coach, like Richmond and Collingwood have done to Hardwick and Bucks respectively. The 2 ex-Hawks blokes have done little since their arrival or maybe they have. But there’s a couple of ass coaches I wouldn’t mind at the club. I’ll keep those names under the hat at this stage.

Discretion is always important when you're talking to ass coaches.

We assumed because they were from the successful Hawks, they’d solve a problem.

How long has this bloke been coaching? And now you have to bring in ass coaches to make him better? Surely any coach worth his salt surrounds himself with decent staff to start with? And if not why not?
The other trouble is that he doesn't appear to like working with anyone who may have a different opinion or speak their mind. The best ass coaches we've had have all either left or been moved out.
Other clubs like Hawthorn are breeding grounds for future coaches. No=one is interested in any of ours and it appears as if that's the way Roly likes it.

Some ass coaches don't last long around Lyon. Why do think that is. Maybe they made suggestions about his coaching methods?

Ditching Lyon isn't any more nuts than keeping him. He can't or won't adapt to the game's changes, and he can't put a structure in place based on skilful ball use. That's not just based on 2 season with a younger squad.

Change isn't going to happen during his remaining tenure. Nor would any new coach manage a miracle turnaround. But I reckon there would be renewed enthusiasm with a number of players, in working with someone who coaches positive attacking football..

I reckon Lyon would take the Wallabies back to the top. He wouldn't have to teach them defence and passing backwards.

I reckon you could have stopped there, Corporal Agarn.

Without going through every club, here's a few others. Might be just me, but ours doesn't really seem to stack up, or is just that we aren't doing well that they look very run of the mill. Seems to be a lot more experience at other clubs.

Imagine you’re an ex-player looking to transition to coaching, or an assistant coach looking to make a bid for a top job somewhere in the near future. You’re reasonably hot property, so you have some choice about where you land. How would you decide where to ply your craft?

If it was me, I’d probably want to go to a team that has a chance to win a premiership. It looks good to be part of a premiership culture, and other teams are always looking to steal coaching IP from successful clubs. I’d probably want to join a coaching staff with some highly regarded names, so I could learn from them. I’d probably want to go to a Melbourne club, because you get more opportunity to rub shoulders with footy powerbrokers, and no-one likes flying every second week. I’d probably want to go to a bigger club, as they have more resources and more cache around the league.

Right now, my list of preferred clubs, in rough order, would be:

1. Richmond
2. Collingwood
3. Hawthorn
4. Essendon
5. Geelong
6. Sydney
7. Adelaide
8. Melbourne
9. North
10. Port Adelaide
11. GWS
12. Western Bulldogs
13. St Kilda
14. Carlton
15. Fremantle
16. Brisbane
17. Gold Coast
18. West Coast

For mine, Freo would be a bottom 5 club. If other people feel that way - and I can’t see a reason they wouldn’t - I’m not surprised we don’t get the pick of the assistants.

I'm assuming you put the slime last because you don't like them, otherwise it goes completely against what you just said.
