That’s a little bit selective CA - how many games have D Pearce, Ballantyne, Sandi, Johnson and Spurr played this season?

I'm not trying to be contrary. The question was posed is this as bad as it's been, and is this really the most rubbish footy we've all been forced to watch in a long, long time?

Footy is a subjective thing, so I'm not here to tell people how they should experience the season.

But Freo has played a lot of rubbish footy, and historically has lost more than it has won. That's relevant when considering where this season ranks in Freo's history.

There have been some times this season where I've found Freo games to be very entertaining. The Essendon game was super-fun, the Suns game had its moments. The Bulldogs and Saints games were scrappy but it was good to get a win. The Derby we played well but didn't have the cattle in the forward half after the injuries. The two wins against the Adelaide teams were really fun - if not perfectly played in wet conditions. Even the North game, although the ending sucked was a pretty enthralling contest.

I know it's natural to focus on the negatives after a dispiriting loss like the weekend, but if the exercise is to put the season into a context, there's actually been a lot to like about this season to go with the lots to not like. I don't rank it any higher or lower than those 2007 - 2009 years. I reckon we probably scored more in those years, but blokes like Pavlich, The Wiz and Headland running around down there probably helped that.

If your starting point is that I'm trying to be contrary for the sake of it, I can see why that would be annoying. I acknowledge that I have a contrary view - that I don't think things are as bad as everyone else on Dockerland (save Jezza) - but that doesn't mean it's an act. I'm not trolling, I just don't think this is the worst season ever.

Its not the worst season ever, we only won 4 games in 2016.

Its still equally as unacceptable from the club. We are investing 1.2 million per year into a bloke that is clearly underperforming and on-field results are the only KPI that matters. As a comparison, that 1.2 million per year is a decade's salary for most (more for others).

So far, the last 3 seasons have given us 17 wins from 65 games and thats a winning percentage around 26%. 3 losses (many of them bad losses) for each win. If, as expected, we beat Carlton, we will maintain that 1 win in each 4 games average. You can expect bad years from time to time but 3 in a row with no real signs of change?

All I know is for that amount of money, I expect more...a lot more. So should the club.

Our problem is we rely heavily on Fyfe. We are a four goal better side with Fyfe on board fully fit and a six goal better side with Sandi also included. Unfortunately Sandi , if he plays on, will be a week to week proposition. He is a once in a generation player and will not be replaced easily. Maybe Cerra, provide we retain him, will become an A grader Brayshaw should be OK but we are still a bit thin for quality. This has to be poor recruiting i.e. Matera, MacCarthy.
Even with our very best available we would struggle to make the eight. Our younger players need to make drastic improvements to their disposal and tackling. Is this coaching or are they wrong choices. 2020 for a flag is a pipe dream at the moment. I am sure whenever we play Hawthorn that Clarkson's main message is pressure and they will buckle. So bloody true!

OK chief we are very light on for quality players. A few pre seasons can get a players fitness up to the required level but there are far too many players on our list that aren't natural footballers. The ability to kick well should be the first thing that determines if a player is drafted to our club. Hawthorn kick and pass beautifully and have done for years.

The sad thing for me is that if everything goes to plan in the recondition, restump, rebore, are we there yet plan, is that even if they made any final next year, I would need encouragement to watch the game. That's how unattractive this way of playing this. It grinds players down and robs them of their will to go on.
Perhaps it's just a Monday thing.

Doesn't matter how many they've played Flag. If you're going to use our young list as an excuse after each flogging then except for Spurr they have all played this year and we get flogged whether they are playing or not.

There is a theme in this and similar threads.

Have we recruited poorly? Or have we recruited well, but the players we have are not performing at their best?

It isn't one problem, but one of these is a recruitment problem, the other is a coaching problem.

Quasimodo, maybe we should go back to Harvey. At least with no game plan, the opposition will have a lot more trouble working out how to stop us. At the moment it is " Grab a video of any Freo game in the last 5 years, and lets work out how to stop them."

I remember a NAB cup preseason game a few years ago at Subi. I was sitting just behind the Freo dugout and we were getting towelled up by some Vic club. Robbie Warnock was flaking around on the field, his normal thing I guess, and when he came for a rest Macca got stuck into him big time. Macca was in his face yelling and splattering all over the kid, stabbing him repeatedly with his finger in the chest. Wobbie tried backing away down the boundary but Macca was relentless, red in the face relentless. In the end Wobbie started crying (which made Macca even more furious).

Name me one player in our team that is as proud to represent us as that and I will agree that we've been through tougher times.

Of course we need a new coach, but we also need an on-field leader that is enough of an arsehole to call out bludgers and straighten the boat before sinking - game in, game out. I know there's one in our team at the moment, I saw him on Sunday.

RM,

you don't even need to watch a game from the last 5 years to beat us. The method is simple. Put two good intercept markers at half back and then keep good kickers forward of the ball. Thats how everybody does it and we do our bit by kicking the ball high into our half forward.

Rinse and repeat.

Just watch for it on Saturday

I’m curious as to who it is polly? I agree that we lack on-field leadership though, and have since Pav left.

Nathan Wilson - just watch what he does after Sutcliffe gave that WeePoos player a handpass at the edge of our goal square in the third quarter.

Yeah, the team review this week is a one-on-one discussion with Nathan Wilson - in a locked room, no time limit.
