I'm not trying to be contrary. The question was posed is this as bad as it's been, and is this really the most rubbish footy we've all been forced to watch in a long, long time?
Footy is a subjective thing, so I'm not here to tell people how they should experience the season.
But Freo has played a lot of rubbish footy, and historically has lost more than it has won. That's relevant when considering where this season ranks in Freo's history.
There have been some times this season where I've found Freo games to be very entertaining. The Essendon game was super-fun, the Suns game had its moments. The Bulldogs and Saints games were scrappy but it was good to get a win. The Derby we played well but didn't have the cattle in the forward half after the injuries. The two wins against the Adelaide teams were really fun - if not perfectly played in wet conditions. Even the North game, although the ending sucked was a pretty enthralling contest.
I know it's natural to focus on the negatives after a dispiriting loss like the weekend, but if the exercise is to put the season into a context, there's actually been a lot to like about this season to go with the lots to not like. I don't rank it any higher or lower than those 2007 - 2009 years. I reckon we probably scored more in those years, but blokes like Pavlich, The Wiz and Headland running around down there probably helped that.
If your starting point is that I'm trying to be contrary for the sake of it, I can see why that would be annoying. I acknowledge that I have a contrary view - that I don't think things are as bad as everyone else on Dockerland (save Jezza) - but that doesn't mean it's an act. I'm not trolling, I just don't think this is the worst season ever.
