Port Adelaide won their maiden AFL Premiership with the youngest team in the league that year.

Also, Nick Stevens had left for Carlton in the off-season and Primus and Francou were lost to injury well before the finals commenced.

We do have a team of young players that need a lot more development and in that process are teaching coaches that have no experience also .
We are several years of development behind in the coaching department as well , that puts us years behind in that area also !
Coaching starts with coaches not students !

Most of those young teams who won a GF were in a different era.
Perhaps the next young team with a few additions is us.

A few additions might include some experienced coaches ?

Don't count on it, F00.
There's no removing RL until Rosich goes. And he's backed by the numbnuts in the boardroom.
A fish rots from the head down.

Lyon is entrenched until his contract is up. God help us if they think he deserves another. They surely couldn't be that dumb.

His 2020 premiership 'promise' was carefully worded. He said he'd have no excuse for not achieving it, because he knows damn well he can't, it's just spin for him to help the club buy supporters enduring patience. He could promise to oust Trump and Putin and sort out North Korea, for all its worth.

They are backing him in all singing the same rebuild song, and making the assumption things will come good when the 1 and 2 year players have some more experience, and we have less injuries.

Given the sort of football we saw Lyon coach when he had experienced players, and injuries to key players have always been a constant, I can't see anything changing til he's gone.

Walters is leading our goal kicking with 20 goals and will probably win our goal kicking award with about 25 for the season. West coast have 4 players above Walters at the moment, including a couple who have missed a fair bit of footy.
It’s a terrible indictment on the club that this kind of season total wins the goal kicking award and has done at Freo for years and years. I will go through the stats later but historically our key forwards have been worst in league by a country mile. This is no slight on Walters- he is a small forward that is actually doing his job but our inability to find forwards defies all common sense. You would have thought we would have at least fluked one or two in the draft over the years.

The most frustrating aspect of this rebuild-restump-low scoring-insipid footy that the team is dishing out is that I can't see this changing anytime soon. The performance against the hawks was dispirited and we got out played outclassed and out coached without a yelp. What happened to the sustained success the club was meant to enjoy and what's worse we have only a single first round pick to top up the list once a few of our senior players retire at the end of the season. We will need to rely on our current list and pick 78 onwards to top-up. Some talented rookies may help but it won't change much in the short term.
The sorry state of our footy team is the result of bad administration-recruiting-coaching.
The difference with the Drum era is that no one sold us the sustained success card back then.

WTB sez:

"Keep it in perspective. We got into a GF and finished top of the ladder just a few short years ago"

Short years? SHORT YEARS?!?!?!?!?!

Perspective indeed...

Hmmm.

It really is a question of perspective. From my point of view, 2016, 2017 & now 2018 have seemed like long, dreary & uninspiring footy seasons. I can't honestly say I've enjoyed them.

I really want to believe in the prospect of rapid improvement, but without significant change (for the better) at Fremantle Footy Club, I just can't see it happening.

Things aren’t great, but our historic winning percentage is 44%. We’ve won 39% of our games this season. I’m not sure if it’s our worst ever season - it seems pretty close to average.

39% is exactly as advertised - below average.

You also need to remember that average was dragged down by restricted drafting in our formative years and the coaching of Damien Drum and this year is below that average.

Either way anybody trying to tell me that a winning percentage of 39% is around average is not going to get much traction even when being contrary is taken intro account.

Its below average and below acceptable especially when there is no defined path to improvement. The club's board has been derelict in its responsibilities in not addressing this continued failure especially when they had an opportunity to do so earlier this year.

Then the average is not good enough. Otherwise we're back to shrugged shoulders and enduring mediocrity.

Not only that, the football is just awful to watch - even from our talented players, who were part of the virtually unwatchable Minor Premiership slog.

At least when we sucked in the old days, there was the Wiz, Clive, Medhurst, Pavlich, Long (and short)muir, Elvis and Haselby, (plus Jack Anthony and Sylvia jokes) to ease the pain and suggest we were capable of going somewhere, and playing out of your seat footy. Blokes you'd turn up to see play, even when the odds of winning were poor. Lyon has well and truly killed that off.
