TOPIC: As bad as it's been

I don't think that's an accurate representation of the forwards.

Some of them struggle to put their hands below their head. It was a forward line of scarecrows on the weekend. Getting them to take a mark must be like trying to land the football in a shallow fruit bowl. With fruit in it.

They're great on Plan A. They fall apart a bit when the opposition make a change.

What has not been noticed so far on this thread, is that premiership coaches generally get the best out of the players they have got, including the players rejected or traded by other clubs. Our team could , as Yeti states , be battling for a top 4 spot NEXT year with the right coach. Find him and hire him.

I think we have a genuinely good backline. Not simply because the ball is down there a lot. I would play Cerra off the backline at this stage of his career. He's a good ball disposer and carrier. He'll become a good midfielder as he gets some size and strength.
Cerra Hamling Ryan
Wilson A.Pearce S.Hill
Give Cerra the job on Le Cras or Rioli in the Derby.
Langdon and Blakely both A graders in the making can also play off the backline.
Mid field with Fyfe in is pretty good - Fyfe, Neale, B.Hill, Walters, Brayshaw with Giro and Crowden coming on
Need I state the obvious (mis-quoting Bill Clinton) - it's the forward line, stupid. There in lies our problems. What to do with Cox, Kersten and McCarthy? Let's hope Tabs regains his form asap.

Two players I didn't mention - Banfield (also an A grader in the making) and Apeness can go forward.
Given the right coaching and game plan we have some good players on the list so don't despair.

For a minute there ddd I thought you were saying Apeness was a future a-grader. The shock settled quickly though.

dddocker - "...Giro etc... coming on"

Whoever's in the firing line needn't worry about packing tissues. Dude couldn't hit the side of a barn from the inside.

Masten comment in paper about Mitchell impact on kicking just shows why with good coaching improvement can be quick. Our kicking is terrible and not improved over the years so there's the main problem right there. Mark Duffield said as much in his article. If your turning the ball over as much as Freo its pretty hard to defend because most times your totally out of position when they attack with clean disposal. Has to be first thing looked at.

Yet we had our team play together and for each other like they haven’t for weeks - even months.

If we want to give our blokes the greatest incentive to work their absolute butts off from here until the next Derby - play the vision before, during and after every training session of Gaff deliberately king hitting Brayshaw followed by vision of Simpson saying t wasn’t intentional.

No better team to focus on for how to dismantle and grind into the dirt. They’re a top 2 team so if we can beat them we can beat most sides.

One thing is for sure - we MUST win the first Derby next year.

Sounds good Jason except the problem as we all know is not passion nor effort. I think today we had more effort and passion than the other mob.
I said about two years ago at the beginning of the rebuild we need to focus on elite kickers of the football. Unfortunately it appears Crowden, Giro, Langdon, Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Matera, A Pearce and even Fyfe, Blakely and B Hill are not good disposers of the ball. How much they improve if any, will go a long way to determine where we end up.

When you list our elite disposers (Wilson, Hill, Ryan, Mundy, Walters) compared with say the Hawks (whole team except Shoenmakers), you see how far apart our recruiting philosophy is from Clarksons.

I dont care who we get next, the bloke has to be able to kick the footy. Bennell would help.
