We will obviously make a big play for Hogan when he comes out of contract at the end of 2019

Others include Kelly from Geelong and remember Tom Lynch could still be up for grabs from the Gold Coast but probably unlikely if he wants to go home to Victoria. Kelly in particular has to be a ‘must’ as he has already expressed desire in returning to WA and he is a goal kicker.

We also need room in the war chest for A Pearce, Cerra (hopefully) and the way T-bone is going lately he could be due a bumper pay rise too!

So I’m glad we didn’t sell the farm for McGovern because we will have other targets to secure and players to retain.

Where's this war-chest? You don't reckon Fyfe, Walters, Hill bros, Neale, Bennell have snatched a fistfull or two of doubloons?

With rule changes coming blokes like this could be on the outer you never know!
They seemed to become more valuable the more the game became a rolling maul and bombing it in under pressure

Look how good Ibbo was for a few years. He thrived as our intercept marking player when we applied extreme pressure in the midfield. But I reckon the value of that type of player could be on the way out if the game is headed back to teams setting up without a ‘plus one’ in defence.

Now teams know about the strength of McGovern in this area they will find a way around it and his influence will dwindle.

I hope so KK. We've known of his(and Hurn's) strengths for a long while now, but it hasn't stopped us kicking it to them.

I think it’s fascinating that he gets written off as some sort of one dimensional player. I get it that he plays for the other mob so is coming from a long way back but this year he’ll grab his 3rd AA jumper.

The bloke can play.

I’m all for bringing back home grown players but can we keep some perspective on what type of players we need. Jack Martin isn’t one of them. We need a key foreward (I wish I had a dollar for every time I read that over the last five years). We don’t need a small midfielder even if he is going cheap. Hogan types on the other hand are worth their weight.

CA, if you watched the Pies v Eagles, and again on the weekend, we’re not the only team Gov takes intercept marks against. He deserves credit at exploiting the opposition forward thrusts. Our bloke Ryan is developing that part of the game and in the last 12months, has cemented his spot in the side. I’m sure, some of the kids we’ve recruited will turned out to be $1M players. It’ll be the talking point in a few years when Brayshaw, Cerra and these types become superstars and lure of home becomes a factor.

McGovern plays well against rubbish teams who don't bring the ball in with any system. Boot it long into the forward line and McGovern will burn you.

He's the Graeme Hick of football.

I know, I think everyone is the Graeme Hick of football.

McGovern is really good, and his salary is probably around his market value. But in the salary cap era premiership teams are built by assembling a team of players who play above their salary. We would have had to pay him much more than he’s worth.

McGovern plays a role similar as Johnno did for us a few years back. Johnno didn’t get quite as many marks, but he was a much better one-on-one defender when required, and a much better rebounder. We wouldn’t have been paying him $1 million a season.

I think for our team that money is better spent elsewhere. I think the focus should also be on finding the next good guy who slips through the cracks rather than chasing blokes we already missed.
