TOPIC: Change

What has to change is the stubborn and stupid AFL sending teams to play in Darwin ...it’s ridiculous and likely both teams will be knackered for this weekend.

Looks like some people beat me to it Hypen.

I wasn't one of the 15 friends and family members of Watters and Cummings that watched the show, so perhaps some things were taken out of context, but what exactly did Hardwick change with Richmond, and how is the way they play any different from Freo at its best? They start with a 5 man forward line with one tall and 4 small forwards who all flood back. They rely on pressure to win the ball in the back half. They score only a few points more per game than Freo in 2013.

They are just infinitely better at it than us at the moment. They go harder, for longer, than any other team. It's classic RolyBall. I honestly think that our 2013 side would be better than Richmond and current premiership favourites.

I think it's probably time for Lyon to move on, and I agree that with a younger team there is probably merit in reducing the running up and down the field, but does anyone actually think Hardwick could do better with our current squad? Or, put another way, how good would Richmond's forward line be if you replaced Rewoldt, Caddy and Dusty with Cox, Matera and Walters?

Hypen, I supported the coach up until game 2 this year. I have changed my view because I believe he will not change. Whether this is because he has no other plan of attack, because he has a belief that his plan will work no matter what, he is to bloody stubborn to admit he is wrong, or he believes he does not have the players for any other style of play, ( a serious indictment on him, and his support staff if actually truly the reason, and a good enough reason to sack him on its own accord), does not matter. The fact that nothing has changed will see him gone by the start of next year.

While most of us don't believe D Pearce is in the future of Freo going forward, there were strong pushes from the many and varied camps on D/L that he should have played in Darwin. He should have, in place of either Matera or Giro.

The point Watters was making is that those two coaches changed, maybe not game plan but management style.

There has been signs of change but under pressure he reverts to type.

They played way too deep on Saturday night and they end up playing without aspiration.

Buckley and Hardwick aside, two questions.: does Lyon need to change and is he capable of doing it?

That's the problem with not being results driven in a sporting competition. Whether or not his ideas work will never concern him because he is devoted to those ideas.

All that will ever concern Ross Lyon is whether his idea is being executed the way he wants it to be.

"The reason Melbourne were walking the ball out of the centre was because we were hesitant at the ball, knowing we had nothing on offer forward."

Did I just read that or did I dream it up. You are seriously telling us that the mids won't try to get the ball? You are seriously telling us this is because they don't have confidence in the forwards or something? Reality check warranted I think.

People can be dismissive of Watters and co and refuse to acknowledge that they may actually have a point. The same people were dismissive when Gary Lyon said similar things. They've been dismissive when Dockerland members said the same things.

The facts are we got smashed on the weekend by a side that at best will make the power end of the eight. The week before we got smashed, at home, by a team that had only won one game all year.

When Roly came on board we were assured of sustained success and things like no more huge losses. Well neither promise was accurate.

Roly's problem is he refuses to acknowledge the real world, much like his supporters. He insists that players need to change to fit in with his "only" method of play. Buckley, for example. opened up Collingwood's forward line when Stephenson showed what he could do and they profited from that. Roly won't adapt to his playing group but stubbornly insists everybody adapts to his desires. It hasn't worked and I can't see that suddenly changing because of wishes.

If he refuses to use the playing group to their best advantage then he's not doing what he's being paid to do. The board needs to act on this.

So what should Lyon do with the forward line? He's had people there the last month - too many at times according to some. Cox showed a bit so he's kept him down there. Walters showed he was more valuable in the forward line, so he has been stationed there since he came back (even when our midfield is depleted). We still got smashed. Before all this he brought Tabs into the side and he looked good, and so did McCarthy, and so did we at times.

Richmond improved because their middle tier of players got to the best form of their careers in their mid-to-late 20s. Same with Collingwood, who also improved because good players kept wanting to go and play for Collingwood. Most on here made fun of Buckley for underachieving most of his coaching career. It's easy to suggest he 'changed his approach' and that lead to winning. I reckon better explanation is that his team is better so now he looks like a better coach.

Even your example yeti, of Stephenson being so good he forced Buckley to open up the forward line, starts with a forward being super-talented.

Jimb, I said the midfield and backline are getting smashed because they have no idea what they will do with the ball when they get it. There are no options forward most of the time, so they are forced to back or sideways, and with most other teams having forwards in place, we are placed under pressure.

Morgan, is this the same Cox who was playing up on the half back line for a good portion of the game? The same Walters who was being scragged, held and elbowed as was trying to sprint forward from half back AFTER we gained possession of the footy, and who resorted to long bomb torpedos from half back in the end. Sure Cox took a couple of marks up forward, but in the situation where the ball came straight back in after a Melbourne miskick. Both he and Apeness are not the quickest forwards around, but Lyon persists with a strategy that requires them to present up to half back then sprint for the forward line if we maintain possession. When was the last time you saw Freo forwards leading at the footy for most of the game? The last time I can remember is the pre-season games, when we scored heavily and won games.

Zoom out for a minute ... and answer me these three questions which I think are critical for success in team sports?

- do we have a game plan?

- do the players understand the plan and what is expected of them?

- do the players believe in and trust the coaching team in what they are trying to achieve?

First question ‘maybe’ but I don’t see any consistency in approach

Second question I’d say no, our errors / turnovers go beyond individual skill errors ... even Walters and Hill missing easy targets ... players simply don’t know where each other are moving to as we transition down the field.

Three, and don’t give me sanitised interviews from Fyfe, Mundy et al as feedback, ... effort on field, behaviour off field, key players lashing out through frustration and getting suspended says they’re not invested and I don’t blame them.

Zoom out a bit more.

More.

More... little bit...

yeah that's it.

Imagine you didn't support Freo. Imagine this wasn't your team.

It's not hard to do that, by the way. Just dig up some of your own posts from the last few years talking about the Pies, or GC, the Giants, Pooooort etc. Now apply the same critiques or seasoned well balanced and fair appraisals towards Freo instead of being a supporter.

Take away the victim mentality.
Take away the personal judgements based on nothing but airy wafts at a wedged underpant regarding when you think the coach decided what.
Take away the personal. Go commando.

You'd laugh at them.

Laugh.
